  • No Children Note per Beth Thurman file: When Alexader Deal died, his baby daughter, Cora, inherited the old home place. This was a really neat house that survived into the l980 s. It had once had a hall, but it had been closed in after Cora married A. M. Gumpert, a divorcee. Also, it had once had a detached kitchen, but Mr. A.M. and Mrs. Cora had joined it to the main house by the time I, Beth Thurman, was born. Prairie Grove and Ladelle Baptist Churches always used the Deal/Gumpert pond for its baptizings until around the l990 s when both built baptistries. It had one of the hardest sandy bottoms in the area. Mr. A.M. and Mrs. Minnie Pearl Deal Glosup Gumpert would sit on their front porch and entertain the guests who came for these events. Also, they made their home available for the persons getting baptized to change clothes. As a child, I (Beth Thurman) could not resist wandering around and looking at all the furnishings in the house. Mr. Gumpert was an excellent carpenter and stone engraver. In fact, many of the tombs in Drew County would not exist if it were not for him. He made them of a concrete mixture that was less expensive than other tombs. Because of this, more people could afford to buy a Gumpert tomb than any other. He also made the concrete sign showing where the Deal Cemetery was located, as well as many of the benches and flower pots in this cemetery. After Cora Deal Gumpert died, he married her niece, Minnie Pearl Deal Glosup, the childless widow of Brooks Glosup, who moved into the old Deal homeplace. They were both in their late 80 s when they died and left the place vacant. Bill and Peggy Echols bought the property and built a new home, and unfortunately, the old home place was eventually torn down. It was the oldest home in Ladelle before its demisel. Mr. A.M. and Mrs. Minnie were born in l890,and he died in l976, and she died not too much longer after our interview in l977. She could remember a lot of the Wests.
