James Madison was a wage hand for Laura's father, Hampton Baucum. When Laura was thirteen years old she and James eloped and rode a mule to the county seat at Princeton, Arkansas near Malvern and were married November 22, 1881. James Madison became a Methodist Minister and preached at the Green Hill Methodist Church for many years.
