The "Conscriptio Czirákyana" took place in 1819 & 1820. Francis (Franz) I (1768-1835) of Austria-Hungary was king. Land reforms had been attempted and were still being considered but feudalism and mandatory field labour by the peasants for their lord was still a fact of life.
These "census" records can be useful, with conditions, for purposes including:
It has been microfilmed (53 rolls) and is available through LDS Family History Centres for viewing. The FHC Catalog does not cross-reference these films: only the film notes list the more than 2200 Hungarian names of villages covered. The German Genealogy: Transylvania Village List lists the FHL film numbers in the reference materials for those Transylvanian Saxon villages where filmed materials exist.
In the entries I have reviewed, the following format is generally followed:
Title page |
5-10 pages of handwritten
Hungarian text, in a few cases also Latin and German parallel
texts. The text portions (as best as I can determine) are explanations of the ownership of various feudal lands within the boundaries of the village. (A contemporary map of the village would be useful as an aid). Only the lords are named, although some of the villagers' signatures may be appended. |
Tables 1 - 4 with title pages. Column headings are in Latin, but are sometimes supplemented with handwritten additions. Column widths are approximately as shown below. Spelling of names generally follows Hungarian conventions and forms (ie. Michael Schieb appears as Séb Mihály). Note: null entries in the numerical columns sometime appear as " as well as —. |
2-5 additional pages of Hungarian text (larger villages only) |
