Freda
Baker, Galena, daughter of Henry and Annie (Jones) Cutbirth, was born March
16, 1913 in Stone County, Missouri, departed this life Tuesday, December
24, 1996 at 4 p.m. in Cox-South Medical Center, Springfield, at the age
of 83 years, nine months, and eight days. Freda had been a life long resident
of Stone County and was a retired machine operator for a garment company.
She was a member of the “ Sixty-Five “ Full Gospel Church. Survivors include:
five sons Jerry and Gary Baker of Marionville, Terry of Aurora, Mackie
and Mike of Galena, six daughters; Ruth Ann Smith and Joetta Pritchard
both of Aurora, Carol May of Minnesota, Ailene Squibb and Linda Sue Jackson
of Marionville, and Beverly Penny Mason of Reeds Spring, two brothers;
Richard Cutbirth, and Billy Joe Cutbirth of Crane, three sisters; Ella
Clines of Galena, Grace Bell of California, and Netta McKnight of Crane;
33 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives
and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Allen Baker, a son
Ray Dean, one granddaughter, and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services
were held Saturday December 28, 1996 in the “ Sixty-Five “ Church of Spokane,
with the Rev. Joe Dan Edwards officiating. Burial was in the Eisenhour
Cemetery under the direction of Cheatham-Stumpff Funeral Home of Galena.

Services
for Allen O. Baker, 73, Galena, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 65 Church,
with the Rev. Joe Bill Stewart officiating. Burial
will be in the Eisenhour Cemetery, under the direction of Cheatham-Stumpff.
Mr. Baker died at 9 a.m. Saturday in his home after suffering an apparent
heart attack. A life long resident of Stone County, he was a member of
the 65 Full Gospel Church. Survivors include his wife, Freda; six sons,
Ray Dean, Gerald Lynn, and Gary all of Aurora, Mackie and Mike of Galena,
and Terry of Marionville; six daughters, Ruth Ann Smith, Washington, Jo
Etta Pritchard, Aurora, Carol May, California, Aileen Squibb and Linda
Jackson, Marionville, Penny Gray, Reeds Spings; two sisters, Myrtle Gunn
and Tisha Hicks both of Galena; 32 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Stone
County Man Commits Suicide Near Galena Home
Galena, Sept 12 (Special) A 72 year old native of Stone County took his
own life early this morning when he drank poison at the Sidney B Hill home
here where he had been a quest the past week.
Boot Baker, a veteran of World War 1 died about 7:15 am after arising from
bed and dressing for the day. He died before a doctor could be summoned,
Everett Cheatham, Stone County Coronor, said.
Hill told Coronor Cheatham that Baker seemed in good spirits Friday night.
Baker did not leave a note. There will be no inquest.
He was a farmer and carpenter and had been working in Arkansas before returning
to Galena to visit his friends. He was born and reared in Stone County.
Survivors are two sons, T. C. Baker of Springfield and Johnny Baker of
the state of California; two daughters, mrs Lillian Harcia of Miami, Fl
and miss Leoma Baker of Seattle; and two sisters, Mrs Buddy Standridge
and Mrs Squire Meeks both of Galena.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Cheatham Funeral Home
at Galena. Burial will be at Galena Cemetery.

Jewell
(Steele) Barnett, 95, Crane, Mo., passed away at 2:45 p.m. Friday, Aug.
22, 1997, in Columbia Hospital South, Springfield, Mo. Jewell was born
Sept. 17, 1901, in Stone County, Mo., to J. O. and Minnie Steele. She was
married to Alfred H. Barnett on Dec. 24, 1924, and they lived all of their
married life on their farm near Hurley, Mo. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Alfred; and two grandsons, Michael Gold and Dennis Gold. She
is survived by a son, Shirley Barnett, Crane, Mo.; two daughters, Barbara
Riggs, Springfield, Mo., and Jeanette Jones, Jefferson City, Mo.; eight
grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997, in Meadors Funeral
Home, Clever, Mo., with the Rev. Rodney Peters officiating. Burial will
be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Clever. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m.
Sunday in the funeral home, and the chapel will be open Sunday morning.
Memorial contributions may be made to Crane Presbyterian Church

CRANE-Funeral services for Mrs. Antionette Bennett, 74,Crane, will be a
2 p.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church here with Elder Oliver Coones
and the Rev. Edwin Mace officiating. Burial will be in Old
Carney Cemetery near here under direction of Manlove of Crane.
A lifelong resident of this area, Mrs Bennett died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday
in Springfield Baptist Hospital where she had been a patient eight days.
Surviving are a daughter Mrs . Wilma Gentry, Santa Maria, Calif.; four
sons, Earl Springfield, John Bennett Jr. Marionville, Ray, Crane, and Jack,
San Jose, Calif.; and two brothers, Maynard and Melton Taylor, both of
Fresno, Calif.

Evelyn
Irene Bennett, age 70. Crane, Mo., departed this life Tuesday, February
19,1991 at 2:18 p.m. in St.John's Regional Health Care Center, Springfield,
Mo.
Mrs.
Bennett was a lifelong resident of the Crane area where she was a retail
store clerk for several years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church
and
the Oak Leaf Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband,
Ray Bennett; three daughters, Ethelene Munson of Pittsboro, NC., Judy Mohnike
of Sutton, Neb., and Cheryl Dandridge of Joplin, Mo.; two brothers , Van
Black of Santa Anna, Calif., and Herman Black; one sister, Mildred Tilden
of Galena, Mo.; seven grandchildren , Michael Dandridge, Andrea Dandridge,
Alisha Dandridge, Annette Munson, Amy Munson, Todd Bennett Soderman, Lance
Soderman, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Evelyn
was preceded in death by one son, Gary.
Memorial
contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, First Presbyterian
Church, Crane Community Cemetery, or Northern Stone County Food Pantry.

services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 22 in the First Presbyterian
Church of Crane, Mo., with the Rev. John W. Skillings officiating.
Final dposition was cremation. Services were under the direction
of Manlove- Stumpff Funeral Home, Crane, Mo.

services for Garry R. Bennett, 26, who died Wednesday in Hayward, Ca.,
will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta

native of Cape Fair, Mo., he was employed by General Motors of Fremont
and was a member of the United Auto Workers, Local 1364, and Alameda Lodge
No. 167 of Fremont, Ca.
He
is survived by his wife, Dorothea Bennett; one son Todd Bennett of Fremont;
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bennett of Crane, Mo., three sisters, Cheryl
Bennett of Oklahoma City, Okla., Ethelene Munson and Judy Bennett, both

Harold Bennett, Crane, Mo., 76, departed this life at 2:36 p.m. Wednesday,
May 12,1993 in St.John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, Mo.
Jack
was born July 23,1916 in Flat Creek,Mo., to John A. and Antionette Bennett.
He had been a resident of the area for the past 10 years coming from Stockton,
California. He was a heavy equipment operator, and of the Baptist
faith. He is survived by his wife, Pearl Bennett of Crane, Mo.; three
brothers, Ray Bennett of Crane, Mo.;and John and Earl Bennett both of Springfield,
Mo.; one sister Wilma Gentry of Santa Maria, Calif., and a host of other
relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, in First Baptist Church, Crane.
Burial was in Crane Community Cemetery under the direction of Manlove-Stumpff

Pearl
L. Bennett, Crane Mo. departed this life June 6,2002 in Aurora Community
Hospital, Aurora, at the age of 86 years. She was the daughter of John
and Ola Mae ( Whitmire) Lewis and was born on February 29,1916. Pearl was
a retired retail sales manager and had lived in the area the past 19 years
coming from California. She was married to Jack Bennett, who preceded
her in death May 12, 1993 and she was a member of the First Baptist Church
in Crane.
Survivors
include : three sisters, Thelma Sawyer and Jonnie Davis both of Fairfax,
Okla, and Beatrice O'Banion of Tulsa, Okla.; several nieces and nephews
and a host of friends.
Funeral
services were at 1 a.m. Monday June 10 in First Baptist Church, Crane with
Gregg Boll officiating. Burial was in Crane Community Cemetery under
the direction of Manlove-Stumpff Funeral Home, Crane. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund
or Scholarship Fund.

FRANKLIN
BEST
Franklin Best, born August 30, 1855 in Washington County, Kentucky and
Elizabeth Crow Lewis Best, born April 18, 1848 in Kentucky, were married
on March 14, 1865 in Washington County, Kentucky. Along with several
other family members, they traveled to Missouri in the 1860's living first
in Jackson County and later in Stone County, Missouri. Franklin farmed
property located south of Reed Springs where the Shore Acre Resort and
Lake Village Resort are now located.
In 1900 they moved, with other family members, they moved by covered wagon
to Indian Territory settling on a farm near Coweta, Oklahoma where they
lived until their deaths. They had been married for sixty seven
years
at the time of their death. Elizabeth died on January 5, 1933 and four
days later Franklin died. The doctors stated that Franklin died due
to grief over the death of Elizabeth.
Funeral services were conducted in the Shahan Baptist Church and they were
buried in the Shahan Cemetery, both located near Coweta, Oklahoma.
There were survived by four sons, Simon of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Will and
Frank of Coweta, Oklahoma; Homer Gray of Pueblo, Colorado, two daughters,
Lucy Moore of Broken Arrow and Mattie Pearl Cambron of Tulsa, Oklahoma;
twenty grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren.

LAURA BELLE BEST
Mrs. Laura Belle Best, 85, 2611 Carolyn Street, Muskogee, died in alocal
hospital Monday afternoon following a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Missouri and came to Muskogee around 40 years ago.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Lescher FuneralHome,
after arrival of out-of-town relatives.
Survivors include her husband, Simon, three sons, Leslie and Walter of
Muskogee and Odis of San Diego; three daughters, Mrs. Alta Ellis and Mrs.
Mae Wadkins, Muskogee, and Mrs. Ruby Price, Tulsa; one sister, Mrs.Rosa
Moore, Payette, Idaho; 31 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.

SIMON
HEDGE BEST
Simon Hedge Best, 2611 Carolyn, 89-year-old pioneer farmer, died Tuesday
in a local hospital.
Funeral services have tentatively been set for 2 p.m. Friday in Lescher
Funeral Chapel with burial to be in Greenhill Cemetery.
Born March 28, 1874, in Kansas City, Missouri, he came to Indian Territory
in 1900 with his family, from Reed Springs, Missouri, now inundated by
Tablerock Lake and dam.
He first settled north of Tulsa and moved to Muskogee County in 1909 and
farmed at Hyde Park, Fort Gibson and Keefton.
While living in Kiowa County, Best worked with the Indians and trainedwild
horses and taught them proper methods for burying their deceased.
He was a member of Boston Avenue Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
Survivors include three sons, Leslie and Walter both of Muskogee andOtis
of San Diego, California; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence Wadkins of east
of Muskogee; Mrs. H.C. Ellis of 2620 Carolyn, Muskogee, and Mrs.John Price
of Tulsa; a brother, Homer of Riverside, California; 31 grandchildren,
63 great grandchildren and three great great
grandchildren.

& MRS. ROY BOWLING
Funeral
services for Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bowling, both 65, Route 1, Billings, will
be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Hurley High School gymnasium. Mr. and Mrs.
Bowling were found dead in their mobile home about 8:30 a.m. Friday. Their
deaths were ruled “due to accidental suffocation” by Stone County Coroner
George Manlove. The couple’s son-in-law, Joe Cypret, told authorities he
checked on the couple about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, and they were all right.
Bowling, an invalid, had to be put to bed each night, Cypret said. Friday
morning, Mrs. Cypret went to check on her parents and found them dead.
Manlove said after the investigation “the small propane gas stove apparently
used up all the oxygen in the small trailer.” The couple apparently had
been dead six to eight hours when they were found. The Bowlings are survived
by three sons, Gilbert, Route 1, Billings, George Bowling, Jr., and Charles,
both of Maquoketa, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. Ida Cypret, and Mrs. Thelma
Anderson, both of Route 2, Crane, and Mrs. Maymelee Renfrow, Route 1, Thayer.
Mrs. Bowling is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Rachel Musical and
Mrs. Florence Horn, Billings, and Mrs. Maymie Anderson, Crane; and two
brothers, Leonard and Cecil Cupp, Crane. Mr. Bowling’s other survivors
include two sisters, Mrs. Emma Stephens, Galena, and Mrs. Audie Jackson,
Crane; and five brothers, Clyde, Chelsea, Okla., Earl and Elmer, both of
Orvilla, Calif., Oral, Sacramento, Calif., and Leonard, Galena. The Rev.
Frank Eaton will officiate at the services and burial will be in Masonic
Cemetery in Crane under direction of Manlove.

REEDS SPRING---Charles Hervey Butler, 84, longtime resident of Reeds Spring,
died at 4 p.m. Thurday in his home.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha May, of the home; a son, Tommy, Reeds
Spring; a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn James, Reeds Spring; a brother Frank, Joplin;
and three grandchildren.
Funeral
Services were held at the Reeds Spring High School with Rev. John Daly
officiating. Burial was in Yocum Pond Cemetery under direction of Stumpff
Funeral Chapel, Reeds Spring, Mo.
