 OTIS F. DOUGLAS
Illness Proves Fatal for Veteran Crane Business Man, Who Was Active in Early Days Of Town.
Friends Pay Tribute
Masonice Body Has Charge of Funeral of First Master of Crane Lodge Sunday Afternoon

The Church which he had helped to found overflowed as friends gathered Sunday afternoon to pay thier final tribute to Otis F.Douglas who for more than forty years had stood out as a guiding spirit in Stone county and the things that have been done here.
But as the throng listend to the words of the young minister, filed out of the building and gathered at the side of the open grave for the last brief rites of the Masoic fraternity, there were few whose minds dwelt upon the material things that had made his life outstanding. As these old friends of his youthful struggles, light of his later years shivered in the bitter wind of the gloomy afternoon their thoughts, perhaps, sought out the human qualities of the man which had caused him to take life as he found it, to live, first of all as a human being among his fellows.
The sale, less than a lmonth ago of his business, which he founded here 42 years ago, brought to an end the active career of Mr. Douglas which had embraced the professions of teaching, law, banking, real estate, and a sustained interest in civic affairs. Death last friday at the age of 74 years ended the illness which had forced his retirement.
Born at Windsor in Henry county Sept. 6, 1860, Mr. Douglas came to Stone county in 1882. He engaged successfully in farming, teaching and banking, serving as first school commissioner of the county and engaged in a banking partnership at Galena with Frank Seamon. He came to Crane in 1892 and opned the office which he operated continously until his retirement, and from which he had conducted activities in real estate, insurance and law.
During the days of the railroad development through Stone county he was one of the local leaders in the movement and personally conducted much of the work in securing the rights of way. Its was at this time that he acquired vast land holdings which at at one time totaled 7,000 acres in the Crane and Elsey communities. He operated the first canning factory in the region.
He was first worshipful master of the Crane Masonic lodge; the first Coucil Commander of the  W.O.W. organization; the first worthy patron of the Eastern Star; first vice president of the Bank of Crane and later president. He served Crane as city attorney for several years and was one time mayor.
Surviving relatives include his wife, six sones, Milo B. Douglas, Ada, Okla.; O.F. Douglas, Jrl, H. G. Douglas, both of Strathmore, Calif.; John A Douglas, Wenatchee, Wash.; Joe Douglas, Washtucna, Wash.; four daughters, Mrs. E. Kirby. Strathmore, Calif.; Mrs. R. F. Tate, San Antonio, Tex.; Mrs. L. A. Kincaid and Miss Dixie Douglas, both of Crane and three brothers, H. T. Douglas, and N. Douglas, both of Shawnee, Oklal; George W Douglas, Odessa, Mo. and two sisters, Miss Ellen Douglas, Eldorado Springs, and Mrs. E. E. Goodrich, Houston, Texas.
After Masonic escort had conducted the body Sunday afternoon from the home to the Christian church the service was conducted by the pastor, D. Wright Lunsford. Burial was in the cemetery of the chruch.
Pallbearers, made of members of the local Masonic lodge, of which he was a charter member, included: Lynn Carney, Clarence Mourning, Joohn Kirby, Geoirge J. Gwinn, Raymond Ellis, all of Crane and Rod Young of Maroinville.

Note* The foregoing article was written by the late Don Wright when he was editor of the Croncicle. O. F. Douglas, a prominent Stone County citizen and Crane buisinessman passed away in December of 1934. Mr. Wright wrote a editorial tribute to the civic leader.
A son of the late Mr. Douglas suggested it woube be of interest to many residents to again publish this article, which again we submit.  (unknown submitter.)
