viii. | Alfred1, GG Grandson. Born in 1844 in Gildersome, Yks, Eng. Alfred died in Van Buren Co.,Iowa,USA., on 25 Jun 1873; he was 29. Saturday 19 July 1873 Gildersome We are sorry to notice the death of a native of Gildersome in Iowa, United States, America, from sunstroke. Mr. Alfred Crowther left England for America on May 20th and safely arrived at Baltimore after a rough passage. His destination was Chicago, which he afterwards left for Van Buren County, Iowa. He applied for work in a woollen mill at Van Buren, but there was not a vacancy, so he decided to hire out at a farm. On June 18th he entered the employ of Mr. Bachelor, of Vernon township, and worked all right until the Wednesday following. Tuesday and Wednesday were very hot days, and on Wednesday the 25th June, Mr. Crowther complained about ten o'clock in the forenoon of dizziness in the head, but worked on until eleven o'clock; after getting on his horse to go to dinner a line came down and he dismounted to fix it. Mt Bachelor then noticed that something serious was the matter with him, as h staggered and was seemingly unable to stand up. He took hold of him, helped him on his horse and got him to the house, and did the best he could for him whilst medical aid arrived. From the time he reached the house he never spoke, and lingered in great pain until evening, when he died. The funeral took place the following day, sermon and service being held at Mr. bachelor's and was largely attended. He was buried in Vernon Cemetery, Iowa. Mr. Alfred Crowther was respected by all who knew him. He took great interest in scientific pursuits and gained a Queen's prize for Chemistry, elementary stage in 1871, besides a certificate for Electricity and Magnetism. In 1872 he also obtained a Queen's prize and first class certificate for Chemistry (Inorganic), advanced stage, and a certificate for Chemistry (Organic). Before leaving England he was presented by his fellow work people with a handsome writing desk, and by the teachers of the Baptist Sunday school, with which he was connected, with an illuminated address expressive of their esteem. Alfred Crowther, Vernon Township, Iowa, 29 years, June 25th, 1873, son of the late Mr. Joseph Crowther, of Gildersome. Friends will kindly accept this intimation. |
