Joshua Arthur Richardson7 (Zebadiah,6 Zebadiah,5 Ebenezer,4 Stephen,3 Stephen,2 Samuel1), brother of the preceding; born in Chatham, N. H., about 1799; he has been married twice, but names and dates were not reported. He went to Ohio with his father’s family in 1806; in his childhood, but while yet very young, went beyond their knowledge, perhaps enticed away, and his friends heard nothing from him for twenty-six or more years. It then appeared that he had obtained a home in Little Rock, Arkansas. He died there about 1870. Some of his sons were in the rebel army. Names and dates and other particulars, are wanting. It is said that the noted rebel general, Bill Richardson [4731] was one of his sons. According to Goodspeeds History of Northeast Arkansas William was a Captain on the Union side. Supplemental According to Frank Richardson, his father, Joshua was from Wales and moved to America in 1804 at the age of 3. They moved to Massachusetts from Maine, then to Missouri, then on. to Fulton Co., Arkansas, where he lived until death. Other family stories, such as the appended account, ’The Alex Richardson Family Ancestors," contradicts this information in some particulars. Joshua was not himself an emigrant to the United States. He was the seventh generation Richardson born in this country his family having been in this country since the 1630’s. Census records indicate that. Joshua was born in Massachusetts or Maine, not in Scotland or Wales as family legends claim. The Richardson Memorial—an 1876 volume that records the lives and progeny of brothers Ezekiel, Samuel, and Thomas Richardson—proves that Joshua’s family had been in the United States for years. Perhaps Joshua ran away from home or perhaps he was kidnapped. Why he waited for twenty-six years to re-establish contact with the family is both a mysterious and interesting question. How did he feel to learn of his father’s death and his mother’s remarriage while he was away? How did the family receive him? Joshua was undoubtedly a person with a story to tell; unfortunately, that story is probably lost to us. A record in Arkansas and the Civil War, by John L. Ferguson (1926), shows that on 12/24/1861, Joshua and his son James were brought as prisoners before the Fulton County military board, which was a Confederate board of inquiry. The recorders of this testimony described Joshua as “Born in Massachusetts aged 61 years, occupation Methodist Minister and farmer 18 years in the State Character Bad” and James as “aged 23 years” and “Character bad as a boy can be.” On this day the board was investigating a secret society with pro-Union and/or anti-Confederate sympathies. According to testimony, some citizens of Fulton County met at or near the home of Joshua Richardson. Both Joshua and James insisted that they “[m]et to protect our lives and property from lawless mobs.” However, other citizens who were also accused claimed that the purpose of the organization was “Rob[b]ing and Stealing from secessionists.” Apparently, the group had a secret oath sign and password; the only one explicitly discussed in this testimony was a piece of yellow cloth, which may have indicated to members that the house was inhabited by members of the society. Joshua married Mary Stafford Oct. 28, 1827 in St. Francis County, Missouri. Mary was the mother of six children with only William S. surviving to 1889. Mary passed away in 1830. Married second Sarah Romine (nee barley). Sarah was the mother of eleven children Children of Mary Stafford:

In 1865 he returned to the State of Arkansas, and after serving for some time as first lieutenant of his company, he was promoted to the rank of captain, and held this office until his company was disbanded. He was at the battle of Pea Ridge, and at this engagement had a brother killed. After the war he served as courier for the Freedmen’s Bureau, in Izard County, for some time. After his return home he found nothing left to show for his early toil, except his land, all his personal property having been destroyed, but he immediately resumed his farming operations, and has since increased his acreage from 160 to 270, a large portion of which he has under cultivation.
