Extract from letter from Joan Hunter (Jan 2002)
Alma used to come to Mum's practically every week but I knew little of her background. She once gave me a small glass object, none of us knew what it was and she just put it on Mum's window sill. Some months later when watching an antiques programme, a similar object was shown and it turned out to be a Victorian knife rest. I became hooked and started collecting them. I haven't seen any for sale for years (Jack used to say "that's because you have got them all!!") but as most of them are glass (some silver or EPNS) probably not many have survived the years. I have about 45 pairs (they were used apparently to rest the carving knife and fork on between the carving of the fatted calf so they would not soil the tablecloth!) Coincidentally, I bought quite a few from Antique Shops down the High Street in Ryde!
Alma had Malcolm but he was brought up by Christopher William (Billy and Lena) at Bill Quay. They lived in a terrace house with allotments on the other side of the street. Uncle Billy had one but I used to be terrified because he also had hens and they used to flutter up in the air, squawking if disturbed.
