Note on Husband: Joseph GREENE - shared note

Military details - E/422338 Private Joseph Greene 8th (Thomond?) Inf. Battalion

worked as a labourer - according to Cally's mum (Pauline Greene)

Marriage certificate reference is Mar 1922 Longford vol 3 page 136

Note on Wife: Mary 'Mae' O'CONNOR - shared note

According to Pauline Gadd (Greene) Mae was supposed to marry Wilie Greene. While Willie was away working in America Mae was working in Kelly's in the Main Street in Longford (grocers, undertakers, bar etc.). One day the Black and Tans came through Longford and Mae was about to be attacked by one of them. As a result of this attack Mae wanted to go to England and stay with some cousins (the Parker family). When she told Willie what she planned to do he begged her not to do this as he was sure that he'd never see her again. Instead he persuaded her to go and visit with his family in Longford so that they could look after her. While with Willie's family she met and fell in love with Joe, Willie's brother. One morning they secretly married but Mae didn't want the Greene family or the Kellys to find out so she took off her wedding ring and wore it on a chain round her neck... until someone let the cat out of the bag!!.

When she died she was living at 7 Netherton Grove, Chelsea, London SW10.
