The Richard H. Black Family Tree Page

The Black Family

I am looking for information on Malcolm Black (abt. 1690), his wife Catherine Mcarthur (abt. 1694), their ancestors and descendants. According to LDS records they had the following sons: John Black Abt. 1720, Archibald Black Abt. 1722, Alexander Black Abt. 1724, Hugh Black Abt. 1726, William Black Abt. 1728, Kenneth Black 1730. They were all born on Isle Of Jura, Scotland.

Any place you look up the surname Black will tell you that we were a sept of one of the following clans: MacGregor, MacLean, or Lamont.

But which one do we belong to?

I asked friend at work that is Scottish. He told me to look at the history of land where your ancestor lived to see which clan occupied that area during that timeframe.

The northern half of island belonged to the Clan MacLean and the southern half belonged to the Clan MacDonald. So apparently our Black family is a sept of the Clan MacLean. My proof is Homelands of the Scots by Roderick Martine, ISBN 0 7157 2075 9. You can find it in a public library under R941.1 MAR. On page 146 it states that the Macleans held extensive estates on Mull, Tiree, Islay and Jura, in Morvern, Lochaber and Knapdale. The best visional evidence is a Clan map of Scotland on the back cover of The Clans, Septs, and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands by Frank Adam. ISBN 0 7179 4500 6. You can find a library under R941.1 ADA. I also flipped through History of The Western Highlands and Isles of Scotland from A. D. 1493 to A. D. 1625 by Donald Gregory. ISBN 0-7884-0420-2 941.1 Gregory. The only clan names ever mentioned with Jura were Macleans, Macdonald, and Campbell's. See Conflict between the MacLeans and the MacDonalds.
