The 1841 UK census lists John as 20yrs, living with his parents in Deans Row, Bollin Fee, Cheshire. In 1851: John is 27yrs (unmarried) still with his family. 1861: John is 39yrs, wife Elizabeth 34yrs and son Thomas 5yrs. 1871: John is 50yrs, at Dean Row. Elizabeth is 44yrs. Sons Thomas 16yrs (blacksmith apprentice) and Joseph Hy 6yrs. The 1881 UK census lists John as 59yrs, living in Dean Row, Wilmslow with wife Elizabeth 54yrs. Children: Thomas Barber 26yrs (blacksmith) and daughter-in-law Sarah Ann Barber 20yrs. Another son Joseph Hy Barber 19yrs (Blacksmith). In 1891 John is 70yrs, living in the smithy at Wilmslow. The 1881 UK census lists Joseph as 19yrs, living in Dean Row Wilmslow with his family. Children: William 10yrs; John 6yrs; Joseph 3yrs; Sarah 3mths infant. May have found John43yrs, in 1861 lodging at Betty Street,Coppenhall, Cheshire. No sign of Frances thus far. Son of Cheshire blacksmith John Barnett (born about 1811) and Frances. In 1841 Joseph is 3yrs old with family at ?Wilderspool Road, Grappenhall, Cheshire District.1. The 1861 UK census lists Joseph as 23yrs, at Old Road, Chesterton, Staffordshire; wife Ann 22yrs and daughter Elizabeth Thorneycrot Barnett 7mths infant. 1871: Joseph is 33yrs, at Church Street, Chesterton, Staffordshire; wife Ann 32yrs. Children: Eliza 10yrs; John 8yrs; George 2yrs. In 1881 Joseph is 43yrs, still at Church Street, Chesterton; Ann 42yrs (born Chesterton). Children: Elizabeth 20yrs; John 18yrs; George 11yrs; Minnie 8yrs; Thomas Frederick 6yrs; Arthur 3yrs, Edwina 1yr infant. BILLINGTON George Blacksmith 1828:George Billington, blacksmith. Born 1828 in Little Budworth, near Tarporley, Cheshire, England. The 1841 UK census lists George as 10yrs, living Little Budworth with parents Thomas 53yrs and Sarah 45yrs Billington and his sister Ann 12yrs. In 1851, George is 21yrs, unmarried, living in Coat Brook Street (near Tarporley); an apprentice blacksmith with Oliver Carter in Rushton, also near Tarporley. He was blacksmith in little Budworth at the time of his marriage in 1853. He was blacksmith in this village until his death in 1879, aged 5yrs, caused by Locomotor Ataxy Exhaustion. Contact Brian by

Returned to original family area (Bredbury/Hyde Area, Cheshire UK) in 1871 and stayed there. England census of 1871 and onwards list the professions above. BRACEGIRDLE Joseph Blacksmith 1807: Joseph Bracegirdle, blacksmith. Born on 6th April 1807 in Ashley, Cheshire, England. Joseph was the second of 9 children of John Bracegirdle and Hannah Hobson. He was baptized in Bowden Parish Church on 10th May 1807. He married Mary Clay on 6th April 1828. On 10th January 1842 he signed an indenture with William Turner of Shrigley Hall leasing him land to build a smithy, which still stands, known as 14a Shrigley Road, Bollington, Macclesfield, Cheshire. He lived there until his death on 12th April 1892, working on the ground floor and all his family of 6 children being born and living above the smithy. He was still working at the age of 73yrs in 1881 although by 1891 he was recorded as a retired blacksmith. His fifth child was Sarah my great grandmother, who lived there working as a dressmaker before her marriage. Contact Cathie by

The 1841 UK census lists Charles as 20yrs, lodging/working for master blacksmiths Jos. Lancaster at Henbury. In 1851 Charles is 32yrs, living in Chestergate Street Macclesfield, Cheshire with wife Sarah 24yrs (born Macclesfield) and son William 2yrs. In 1861 Charles, Sarah and children are staying with Sarah’s relatives (that is Sarah’s sister Eliza and her brother William, a blacksmith) in Macclesfield.

BURGESS John Roden Blacksmith 1889: John Roden Burgess, blacksmith. Born 1889, Northenden, Cheshire, Eng ind. John was the eldest Son of Ralph Burgess and Sarah Roden, he had 8 siblings. Ralph in his later years had a Smithy at Chelford, John (known as Jack opened a Smithy at Ollerton just 5 miles from his fathers and ran this until 1960 ish. BURGESS Thomas Blacksmith 1806: Thomas Burgess, born circa 1806, Bowden,Bucklow, Cheshire. It looks like he had two wive's ( Betty & Sarah ). In 1841 we have him in living in Dunham Town Hamlet, Altrincham, Cheshire, with a Sarah. Then in 1851 living at 49 Pit St. Macclesfield,Cheshire. That's as far as I go with Him. DAWSON James Blacksmith 1754: James Dawson, blacksmith. Born circa 1754 and was buried at Macclesfield Forest, Cheshire on 27 December 1781. His burial entry in the Macclesfield Forest Parish records states that he was a blacksmith aged 27 of Platting in the Forest. James Dawson, blacksmith and Mary Heald spinster of Macclesfield Forest were married on 17 February 1781 at Prestbury Church, Macclesfield, Cheshire. They had one son, James Dawson, baptised 23 February 1782 at Macclesfield Forest who became a cordwainer in Sutton, Macclesfield. Contact Cecily by.

DOUGHTY Chris.J. Blacksmith 1948: Chris. J. Doughty, born 1948 Frodsham, Cheshire,UK. Wife Julie born 1954 in Burnley. Chris took over when his father retired in 1980 but has now (in 2007) retired due to health problems but continues as a blacksmith consultant for anyone who wants/needs advice/help. DOWNS Isaac Blacksmith & Wheelwright 1816: Isaac Downs, blacksmith & wheelwright. Born 13th October 1816. Wife Elizabeth Hopwood (married 1842). He was a Master Blacksmith living and working at Manchester Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport (this being Lancashire in the first half of the century and Cheshire in the latter half). Two of Isaac's sons became blacksmiths, and one became a wheelwright. Isaac died in 1872, but his wife and sons were still running the business in 1891. EDWARD John Blacksmith (Master) 1821: John Edwards, master blacksmith & farrier. Born about 1821 in Cheshire. 1844: although his family are in Wales, John isliving in Chester Cheshire. He married Sarah Foxley, on 11th March 1844 at St Mary's Chester. The 1851 UK census lists John as a patient in the Chester Infirmary, aged 30yrs, born Llan-y-Pwell, Wrexham,Wales – occupation blacksmith & farrier; not sure if he made it out. I would like to find out why he was in there ! Unfortunately I think he may have died there, as I definitely can't find him in 1861. I think his wife was already dead, as I found the children listed as "visitors" in households where they were obviously being looked after while their father was in hospital. On His daughter Hannah’s marriage certificate in1869 he is Master Blacksmith (deceased). See Blacksmiths of Wales for brother Thomas (Jnr). FURBER Lloyd Blacksmith 1864: Lloyd Furber, blacksmith in Cheshire, England. Lloyd was born in 1864 to blacksmith John and Ann Furber at Calverhall. Lloyd moved to Malpas between 1871-1881 and worked as a blacksmith with his brother George. JACKSON William Blacksmith 1855: William Jackson, blacksmith. Born 1855, Foulk Stapleford, Cheshire, England. Apprenticed to George Darlington about 1870. Had been previous resident at Gt Boughton Workhouse along with his 3 siblings, Elizabeth, Joseph and Ann, all illegitimate children of Eliza Jackson. In 1876 he married Mary Ann Lowe and they had 7 children. Sarah Annie 1878 Thomas Lowe 1880 Richard Lowe 1882 Florence 1888 Thomas William 1890 and twins Lydia and Nellie 1893. Daughter Ellen Longden born 1899 Stockport, Cheshire. 1901 census living 2a Derby Street, Stockport, Cheshire. On the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, John Thomas Longden enlisted as a Shoeing Smith with the Royal Field Artillery. He served throughout the war. Children: Richard (born 1841); Frances (born 1843); John (born 1845); Harriett Ann (born1849); Millicent (born 1849) & George (born 1853 & died 1864). All 3 sons worked with him, they never married. The daughter, Millicent Wood married John Charles Arnold, their daughter, Frances Arnold married Walter Wood in Stoke on Trent in 1903 so we became the Wood family again. Harriett Ann married Robert Jones. Before she married John Charles, Millicent had an illegitimate boy named John James Wood born 1871, he kept his mother's name throughout his life and married Annie Marie Bailey in 1903. The smithy was at 23 Adlington Road, Bollington, Cheshire. James was my great, great grandfather. Contact David by

WOOLRICH Henry Blacksmith,Coachsmith 1832: Henry Woolrich, blacksmith, coachsmith. Born 1832 at Chorlton, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England. Parents: John and Mary Woolrich. In 1851 he was an apprentice blacksmith to Thomas Cliff in Hankelow. He was briefly married to Sarah Beech before she died in June 1859, after which he moved to Vale Street, Stoke where he is recorded in the 1861 census as a blacksmith journeyman. He remarried on 8 October 1861 to Isabella Bradshaw, and had 5 children. Thereafter he worked as a loco coachsmith in Stoke on Trent for the remainder of his life, retiring sometime between 1901 and 1911. He died on 21 March 1915 at West Parade, Fenton, Stoke on Trent.
