ATHERTON Thomas Watch maker, Coal Miner 1865: Thomas Atherton, watchmaker & coal miner. The 1881 UK census lists him as 16yrs, living with his father at 22 Warrington Road, (formerly New Road?) It is perhaps not a coincidence that in this census, he is shown living in the household next to the parents of his wife Mary Lyon. Mary's father and brothers are all coal miners. Perhaps the coal mining boom of the time snatched him away from a family tradition of watchmaking. Thomas and Mary had 12 children (that we know of) but we have only been able to find nine of them so far - Minnie, William, Thomas, John, Jessie, Mary, Sarah Heleanor, Jim and Hannah Standish. See Watchmakers Index for his father John (born c1841) and grandfather John (born c1803). Contact Kelly by.

William set up a clockcase-making business about 10 years later, in Birmingham, when in his very early 20s. That business lasted for nearly 60 years until he was bought out. Yes, he worked into his 80s. Research has dug up a newspaper-recorded dialogue that took place between he and representaives of Braunton during 1880-81. He was to have supplied a clock for display in the village square, but the project fell through. However, in 1887 we know he did supply a clock to a church in the village - it's still there! Note: not to be confused with two other William Lerwills (1) William LERWILL who was a watchmaker and jeweller who operated out of Combe Martin in the 1880-1900 period. In fact I believe he and my gt-grandfather had some kind of business connection and (2) a brother of the CM Lerwill happened also to appear in Birmingham for a short while in the 1870s, and lived in the same district as my gt-grandfather! I would also be glad top hear from anyone who knows of ANY Lerwill-supplied clocks. Contact John by
