Interred 29 November 1833 St. Mary, Standon, Hertfordshire. Wife Mary Williams from Little Munden, Hertfordshire, also from a family of Blacksmiths. The 1851 UK census lists Thomas as 6yrs, living at Caddington. 1861 Thomas is 17yrs, still with parents living at Flamstead, Hertfordhsire. DUNKLEY Joseph Blacksmith 1800: Joseph Dunkley, blacksmith. Born 1800, Harleston, Hertfordshire, England. Christened in Harpenden, 22 June 1800. The 1841 UK census lists Joseph as 35yrs, living in Bowling Alley Harpenden (adjacent to his father Robert Dunkley); with wife Hannah 35yrs (born Hertfordshire; died 1845). Children: Emma 10yrs; William 6yrs(see Blacksmiths of Hertfordshire. Can find no reference after 1841 census except a Joseph Dunkley was sentenced to 10 years transportation at the Herts. DUNKLEY Robert Blacksmith 1777: Robert Dunkley, master blacksmith. Born about 1777, Northampton, England. Died 25 February 1855, age given as 78, in Harpenden. The 1841 UK census lists Robert as 55yrs, living at Bowling Alley, the Common, Harpenden; with wife Martha (nee Ivory) 50yrs. Also listed: Eliza Hale 35yrs (female servant); Ellen Dunkley 18yrs (female servant); Emily Dunkley 9yrs (female servant). Robert and Martha married in Harpenden 12 August 1799. Robert’s Forge stood approx where Golf Club house now stands. Their other Children: Joseph (born 1800); Elizabeth; Maria; Eliza; Ann and Elenor all born between 1802 – 1812 in Harpenden. Baptised at St. Mary's in Harrow on 10 Aug 1845. Died 14 Jan 1929 in Bushey, Hertfordshire. In the 1851 and 1861 censuses, he is living with his parents, William and Peggy, in Wembley, Harrow, Middlesex. The 1871 UK census lists him as (Frederick) 24yrs, married, at Primitive Methodist Chapel, Bushy, Hertfordshire. Also listed: his father William Goldsmith (born 1809) blacksmith; mother Peggy 58yrs. Sister Louisa Goldsmith, married, 19yrs; brother Henry Thomas. 13yrs (scholar). Alfred’s widowed sister Harriett Ness 33yrs & her children Georgina Ness 5yrs; Frederick Ness 3yrs; Florence Ness 10months infant. In 1881, he is living with his widowed father, widowed sister Harriet and other siblings in Bushey, Dist. 6. GOODMAN James Blacksmith 1802: James Goodman, blacksmith. Born 1802, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England. Parents: Thomas Goodman & Zilpah Harding. James died in 1878 – he spent the last 17 years of his life as an inmate in Watford Union Workhouse after his wife Sarah died ...where he still worked as a blacksmith. OLNEY Thomas (Snr) Blacksmith 1828: Thomas Olney (Snr), blacksmith. Born about 1828, Hexton, Hertfordshire, England. The 1851 UK census lists him as 28yrs, living in Hexton with wife Arabella 20yrs (born Hexton) and daughter Margaret 11months infant. Visitor: John King 61yrs, Tailor & Draper (born Clophill, Bedfordshire). Thomas Olney was also the Constable at Hexton.

The 1851 census shows him as 48yrs and wife Mary 47yrs born Bedfordshire. Daughters: Hannah 20yrs, Mary 12yrs both born hexton.
PARKIN John James Blacksmith 1879: John James Parkin, blacksmith. Born Aston Birmingham in 1879 and died at Bushy Herts 1944. He was a Farrier & Blacksmith at the Old Forge, Bushy Herts UK. 1900-1920's he also provided horses for haulage, which were stabled at a Public House named The Horse and Chains. At the same time he was a Fireman for 15 years in the Bushy Fire Brigade, also supplying the horses. Photo from the Bushy Museum. The 1851 UK census lists him as 78yrs (infirm), at Water End, Great Gaddesden, Hertfordshire; with wife Elizabeth 57yrs. Children listed: George 33yrs, unmarried; Edmund 39yrs,unmarried (blacksmith); Jane 18yrs, unmarried. Visitor: Fanny Maira Shepherd 6yrs(smith’s daughter). Joseph was a blacksmith in Piccott's Lane, nr Great Gaddesden, Hemel Hempstead sometime between 1840 and 1860, his sons William and Edmund also seem to have been blacksmiths according to 1851 and 1861 Census returns. SUCKLING Thomas Blacksmith 1776: Thomas Suckling was a smith & farrier and a constable in Widford Hertfordshire around 1776. His sons were also blacksmiths and his business was transferred to his son Martin in 1828 and was continued by his son William Suckling until middle 80’s I believe. See also blacksmiths of Essex.
