ANDERSON John Shipwright 1804: John Anderson, shipwright. Baptized at Deptford in 1804. Parents: Richard and Isabella Anderson. After serving an apprenticeship at Deptford, he became a Shipwright based there. John & his wife Jane had four children baptized at Deptford. Contact Judy by
ANDERSON Richard Shipwright 1763: Richard Anderson, shipwright. Born at Gravesend in 1763 (son of Richard Anderson and Eunice Child). In 1778 he was apprenticed to a Shipwright at Chatham Dockyard and served a seven-year apprenticeship at Chatham, Sheerness and Woolwich. Once qualified, he married and settled at Deptford with his wife Isabella: their ten children were all baptized at Deptford. In 1805 Richard was promoted to "Foreman Afloat" and in 1822 to "Foreman of the Yard"(i.e. Deptford Dockyard). Isabella died in 1826. Richard retired in 1828 and continued to live at Deptford until his death there in 1837. Contact Judy by
ANDERSON William Shipwright 1828: William Anderson, shipwright. Born at Deptford in 1806 (son of Richard and Isabella Anderson). In 1828 he married Elizabeth Sarah Riddall at Southwark, Surrey: they had five children. Until 1834 William was a Shipwright, based at Deptford: he then worked for the Excise Service until 1841, when he resumed the occupation of Shipwright, again based at Deptford. He and Elizabeth Sarah both died at Deptford, he in 1873 and she in 1878. Contact Judy by

ARIES James Shipwright 1794: James Aries, shipwright. Born 1794 in Deptford, Kent, England. He married Catherine Maria Randfield the 27th of September 1815. They lived in the Burough of Greenwich next to the Thames River in England. He worked as a Shipwright and had seven (7) children: James (22 Mar 1818); Ann Charlotte (6 Apr 1821); Mary Ann (6 Apr 1821); Sabina Amelia (20 May 1825); James Thomas (12 Jun 1828); Samuel William (27 Jan 1833); and Catherine Sarah ( 1835). James trained his sons in the skill of building and Samuel William went on to own a large building company in England with many employees and household servants. James died at the age of 65 on13 Aug1859 in Deptford, Kent, England and was buried in Brockley Cemetery Plot No 184. Contact DeeAnn by

CANN Alfred Benj. Shipwright 1867: Alfred Benj. Cann, shipwright. Born 1867 in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales. Alfred was the son of Samuel Cann (b. 1828 Appledore) and Mary May Kingdon, in 1889 he marries Jane Byatt White in Bideforf Devon . In 1891 he and his wife are living with his father in Newport. The census shows both Alfred and Samuel are shipwrights, in 1911 he is still in Newport and shown on the census as a shipwright. The 1911 census shows that he is still a shipwright in Newportt and that his son T. Alfred Cann b. Newport in 1891 is now an apprentice shipwright . Contact David by
CANN Samuel Shipwright 1790: Samuel Cann, shipwright. Born 1790, Landkey, Devon, England. Baptised 03 March 1791 in Northam parish church. Samuel was the son of William & Mary Cann. The 1841 UK census lists Samuel Cann as 40yrs, living in Back Lane Barnstaple, Devon with wife Eleanor nee May 50yrs (born Devon). Samuel and Eleanor May married 18 February 1815 at Northam parish church. Children: Margaret 20yrs; Eliza 15yrs; Ellen 15yrs; Samuel 14yrs. Devon on the 1851 census he is a ships Carpenter. In 1851 Samuel is ?61yrs a ships carpenter, still at Barnstaple. Census states married but Eleanor not listed here. Children: Margaret 31yrs, unmarried; Ellen 24yrs, unmarried. Granddaughter Susan Giddy 5yrs; Grandson William Cann 2yrs. Samuel died in 1852 aged 62yrs. B Appledore Abt 1829 with wife Mary( b 1828) & 5 children incl. Paulina (b.1863 Cardiff) & Alfred Benj (b. 1867 Newport) 1881 census at 90 Dolphin St b 1828 Appledore living with wife Mary b 1825 , Paulina & Alfred & grandson Samuel b.1881 Newport 1890 widowed. 1891 census Dolphin St Sam b 1828 Wrafton with Cousin Trevmin? Cann (Single female b. 1860 Appledore, Cousin James White b 1829 Tortland? 1829 & Jane Tury? niece b 1884 Newport also occupying 2 rooms Sam's son Alfred & his family. CANN Thomas Alfred Shipwright 1890: Thomas Alfred Cann,shipwright. Born1890 in Appledore Devon, England. Thomas was the son of shipwright Alfred Benjamin Cann (born 1867) and Jane Byatt White. By the 1901 U.K. census he is living in at 17 Raglan St. Newport Monmouthshire Wales, with his parents and siblings . In 1911 census he is still living in Newport with parents and siblings now at 48 Mendalgief Road– he is now an apprentice shipwright. In 1913 he marries Mary Elizabeth Newport and they have 2 children Gwendoline Mary b.1916 Newport and Alfred Howard b. 1919 . Per the 1947 Kelly’s Directory of Newport Thomas Alfred Cann is a shipwright. In 1954 he died at St Woolos hospital Newport ( per the England and Wales National Probate Calendar(1858-1966). The 1841 Ukc ensus lists him as 9yrs, living with his father Thomas (shipwright) at Exeter Street, Plymouth Parish, St Charles the Martyr. The 1851 census lists him as 19yrs, living at Exeter Street with father Thomas 55yrs (widower) and sister Amelia Carne21yrs.
CARNE Thomas Shipwright 1796: Thomas Carne, shipwright, journeyman. Born about 1796, in Devon. The 1841 UK census lists him as 45yrs, at Exeter Street, Plymouth Parish, St Charles the Martyr; with son Robert 9yrs born Devon. No mention of wife or state of marital status. Living in same address as Caserley Family. The 1851 census lists Thomas as 55yrs,widower. Also listed is daughter Amelia Carne 21yrs (born Devon) and Robert 19yrs (shipwright).
CARR (KERR) Walter Shipwright 1801: Walter Carr (Kerr), shipwright. Born 1801, at Tweedmouth, Northumberland (was Co. Durham), England. Parents: Robert Kerr and Jane Weatherhead. In 1813 he began work at Deptford, Kent, before serving an apprenticeship there and becoming a Shipwright. In 1824 he married Catherine Osborne at Newington, Surrey and they had seven children. Walter lived at Deptford all his adult life except for a year or two c1840 when he was at Sheerness, Kent, due to Deptford Dockyard being refurbished. Walter retired in 1865, by then an Inspector of Shipwrights and died at Deptford in 1881, six years after Catherine. Listed also under KERR. Contact Judy by

His parents where John and Sarah Caryl. 1841: he is at 19 Warren Street, Liverpool as an Apprentice Shipwright. James married Sarah Ramsden on 4th January 1847 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Pitt Street, Liverpool. The 1851 lists him as 27yrs, at 10 Ross Terrace, Liverpool; with wife Sarah 29yrs. Children: Grace.C.1yr old infant and James. J. Caryl 2 month old infant. Mother-in-law: Sarah Ramsden, widow, 69yrs, poulterer. 1861-1871: Shipwright at 25 Mornington Street, Liverpool. In 1881 James J. was an unemployed shipwright, living at Coca Rooms 131 Brownlow Hill, Liverpool which was managed by one of his sons,Edward Caryl. They married in Marylebone 1876. Children: Agnes.L. 13yrs; Harreit.E. 6yrs ; Edwin.J. 3yrs; William Henry 1yrs infant. 1901: Richard is 44yrs, a widower, living at 5 Seymour Road, Chatham, Kent. He was born and lived in the Gravesend - Milton area all his life. He married Mary Ann Butler (born 1806 Northfleet) in 1823 in Stone by Dartford, Kent. They had at least 10 children including several boys called Isaac Richard although only one survived infancy. Isaac Richard's place of death was at the Clarence Tap in Milton in 1856. COOPER Charles Shipwright 1805: Charles Cooper, shipwright. Born 1805 in Sussex. Charles Cooper was one of a family of shipwrights building at Berkeley in 1841. he took over the main yard at Pill in 1862. The yard lay at the head of the creek at Pill and was the only one to have it's own saw pit. He had two sons in the business, John and James . He left the yard to his brother George Cooper who at the time was living in Penarth near Cardiff, George passed the yard over to his younger brother John who worked the yard until 1905 when it closed down. 29 registered Cooper vessels are listed in the booklet "Shipbuilding in the Port of Bristol" published by the National Maritime Museum. DODDS James Shipwright 1771: James Dodds, born Sunderland, Durham on 3rd August 1771. Died: 20th May 1844. In partnership with John Shotton. In partnership with John Shotton, James had a boatyard described as being at the back of the pier in the East End of Sunderland, at a spot now occupied by the South Docks. A History of Sunderland by Taylor Potts states that: "Their shops were on the side of the road leading down to the beach almost opposite Tulip"s lime kiln. The only boatbuilders the pilots would trust to build their cobles were Dodds and Shotton, Humble, and Hardcastle. Ribald boys used to chaunt a doleful lay: "Dodds says to Shotton This boat will soon be rotten. Shotton says to Dodds What odds." Dodds and Shotton were also mentioned in "Recollections of Sunderland in the 1820s by Robinson Crusoe and East End sea-captain" this was a series of articles written for the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle in the 1880s which says The road led down near the boatbuilders shop occupied by Messrs. GODDARD John Shipwright 1846: John Goddard, shipwright & wife Alice of Northfleet. Two Goddard children baptised on the same day,on 17th February 1861 by Vicar J Southgate. They are Joseph Goddard born Aug 1854 and Alice Goddard born March 1859. Information came via the Kent email list. No contact name. See http://cityark.medway gov uk 621jpg. & 622 jpg. Pages 133 & 134. Also baptized on the same day were five children of John & Elaine Liddle. The Goddards and the Liddles may be related as the eldest son of John Liddle had the middle name of Goddard. In 1881 Robert (Jnr) is 52yrs, living at 8 Woodbine Cottage Greenwich with wife Fanny 55yrs (born Creston,Devon). Children: Emily Elizabeth 16yrs. Edward Albert 14yrs; Boarders John Charles Walker 15yrs (engineer apprentice) and Thomas.T. Barham 28yrs (carpenter). HIDER James Shipwright 1794: James Hider, shipwright inspecor. Baptized 1794, at Chatham , Kent, England. Parents: John and Elizabeth Hider. In 1810 he began work as a Shipwright at Chatham Dockyard. In 1819 he married Harriet Buse at Rochester and they then settled at Deptford, where four of their eight children were baptized. About 1841 Deptford Dockyard was closed for a year or so for refurbishment and James and Harriet spent this period at Sheerness. By May 1844 they were back in Deptford, where they spent the rest of their lives. James, by then an Inspector of Shipwrights, retired in 1859 and died in 1879. Harriet died 1887. Contact Judy by

KERR (CARR) Walter Shipwright 1801: Walter Kerr or Carr, shipwright. Born at Tweedmouth, Northumberland (was Co. Durham. Parents: Robert Kerr and Jane Weatherhead. In 1813 he began work at Deptford, Kent, before serving an apprenticeship there and becoming a Shipwright. In 1824 he married Catherine Osborne at Newington, Surrey and they had seven children. Walter lived at Deptford all his adult life except for a year or two c1840 when he was at Sheerness, Kent, due to Deptford Dockyard being refurbished. Walter retired in 1865, by then an Inspector of Shipwrights and died at Deptford in 1881, six years after Catherine. Listed also under CARR. Contact Judy by

The origin of Stephen Maybury is unclear, but he is first recorded when he marries Mary Barr from the Isle of Man at St Anne's, Liverpool on 12th April 1821. They have eight children between 1821 and 1838. Stephen then vanishes before the 1841 census, leaving Mary and a few of the Children in Liverpool. In a later census she is recorded as a widow. PAIN Richard Shipwright 1780: Richard Pain was my 4 x great grandfather. He was born in Fowey, Cornwall in 1780 and according to his indenture papers, of which I have a copy, became an apprentice to Shipwright Thomas Nickel in Fowey in 1795. On the completion of his apprenticeship in 1802 he moved to Devonport where he took up work in the Naval Dockyards.
