Wife: Mary Ann Kidner, married 1881, the daughter of Anthony Kidner, a shepherd of Broomfield, Somerset. Theodore worked as a blacksmith in both Somerset and Glamorgan. I have not been able to find when, where, and to whom he was apprenticed and only know that he left Somerset sometime between 1885 and 1890. Theodore James & Mary Ann's first two children were born in Somerset around the Puriton area and then about 1886-7 they went to the Rhondda where he become a colliery blacksmith. They had three more children. He remained here until he entered Bridgend Mental Hospital; from what I can gather, he was melancholic after the death of his wife (in 1908) and was finally admitted there some two or three years previous to his death on 26 August 1919, at Bridgend, Glamorgan. His father had been a solderer, part of the whitesmith trade. His brother William was also a whitesmith and eventually got a job with Brown Lennox in Pontypridd, Glam. His first assignment was to install gas in Lennox's house. In those days gas piping was quarter inch lead tubing, lead being another aspect of the whitesmith's trade. Cross was a staging post on the Stage coach run between Bristol and Exeter and it is likely that he was involved in the day-to-day upkeep and repairs to the coach trade. | SLADE | Thomas | Blacksmith | 1829: Thomas Slade, blacksmith. Baptised 15th November 1829 at Leighland Chapel, in the parish of Old Cleeve, Somerset, England. See 1851 census. He married Eliza Larcombe in the second quarter of 1858, and settled in his home village of Roadwater, a small hamlet within the Parish of Old Cleeve. In "The Book of Roadwater, Leighland and Treboroiugh" by Clare and Glyn Court (ISBN 1 841134 342 1), there are two pictures of Thomas, one outside his forge with his wife and son James, and one of him in his garden. He was very musical being cellist, band and choir master in the Bible Christian Chapel in Roadwater. His old forge in Roadwater is still standing, although converted into a private residence. Thomas died on Boxing Day 1907 at Roadwater and Eliza on April 21st 1907 and are buried together in Old Cleeve graveyard. See Blacksmiths of Somerset Index for their son James (born 1869). The 1841 census lists him as 20yrs, living in Bayford with Stoke Trister, Somerset. Wife: Mary 20yrs (transcription error: says 28). They married 1839 Wincanton. 1851 Census, resident Stoke (Trister). 1861 resident Donhead St Mary, Wiltshire. There is a death of a John Stone aged 49yrs in 1868 at Tisbury, Wiltshire. Mary Stone is a widow in the 1871 Census. I will now need to access the Somerset Parish Records held in Taunton together with marriage certificate for John to Mary Lush. I have seen The Old Forge building in Bayford and other relevant buildings. Francis's first wife, Louise Edmonds, died in 1846 leaving him with 4 children under 8, and several years later he married Anne Horwood. The family emigrated to New South Wales on board the "Kate" and the Index to Assisted Immigrants to NSW shows them as follows: WARRY: Francis 44, Anne 32, Sarah 16, Joseph 14, Grace 11, Francis 9, Ann 2, Alma, infant. The family arrived in Sydney on 4 December 1855 and settled first at Emu Plains, NSW where Francis worked as a blacksmith. They later moved to the gold mining town of Hargraves and descendants of some of the children of Francis' first marriage to Louisa Edmonds still live in Australia today. Gaius immigrated to South Africa where he met and married Maria Dingley, in Stanger, South Africa 17th March 1886. My Grandmother was his daughter. Maria died during childbirth, possibly around 1911 and apparently in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. He later married Emily Lott (nee Dove). Gaius is listed in Blacksmiths of Somerset and South Africa.
