Difficult to find after that as so many William bakers are on the census.

Barnard was a Carpenter, and in 1865, when he married Ellen in Cheshire, he was a Wheelwright. By 1871 he was residing 1 Ostrich Rd., Castle Acre.,(2) Ellen 33yrs (born Cheshire). BARFORD Joseph Wheelwright 1786: Joseph Barford, wheelwright. Born 1786 in Harlington, Bedfordshire, England. Although no baptism has been located, it has been substantially proven through other documents that Joseph was one of four children of John Barford & Ann Richmond. Joseph's first wife was Sarah Inns (no issue found). His second wife Rebecca Leaver (m. 1820) was from Cookham, Berkshire. Joseph practiced his trade as a wheelwright in Cookham and died in January 1848. Two of Joseph & Rebecca\'s children emigrated to South Australia. Contact Diane by

Thomas married Harriet Owen (nee Terry) 1842 in Middlesex.. Thomas, Harriet and his stepdaughter Catherine arrived Australia on 17 Jan 1849 aboard the "Thomas Arbuthnott", his occupation being Blacksmith & Wheelwright. BENNETT Edward Wheelwright 1884: Edward Bennett, wheelwright. Born 1884 in Ryde, Isle of Wight. The son of Henry Bennett, a blacksmith and wheelwright who was born in Odiham Hampshire. He had a workshop next to St John's County Primary School, Ryde, and owned the first cottage on St John's Road. He died 1904, from a "coughing fitquot;. BENNETT Henry Wheelwright, Blacksmith 1823: Henry Bennett, blacksmith, wheelwright. Born about 1823 in Odiham, Hampshire. He moved to the Isle of Wight sometime before 1847. He married Ellen WHEELER in 1847. He was a blacksmith and wheelwright in Ryde. He appeared on the census from 1851 to 1881. He died in 1882, and was buried in Ryde Cemetery. BENNETT Henry John Wheelwright, Blacksmith 1876: Henry John Bennett, Blacksmith, wheelwright. Born 1876 in Ryde, Isle of Wight. On his marriage certificate, his father is noted as Edward Bennett, a Wheelwright. At the time of his marriage, Henry was living at No: 1 St John's Rd. He later had a workshop at the bottom of Park Road, Ryde, on the site of the old Vectis Bus Depot. On the 1933 Electoral Reg, he was living at 9 Ryde View, St John's Wood Rd Ryde. he died in 1949. CHENEY John Wheelwright,Blacksmith 1806: John Cheney, wheelwright, blacksmith. Born 6th April 1806, Cublington, Buckinghamshire, England to Henry Cheney and Anna (unknown). He married Hannah Tofield on the 18th March 1827 (aged 20) at Stewkley, Buckinghamshire. Prior to immigrating to Australia they had six children. John was charged with larceny at the county sessional court in Buckinghamshire on 27 June 1843 but found not guilty. The family arrived in Australia on the 26th June 1844 on board the "Royal Saxon" as free immigrants. John was listed as a carpenter on his arrival and worked briefly as a shepherd for .Walker and Co. on Kyamba Station(near Albury) By 1855 he was working as a wheelwright at Kyeamba. In 1859 the family were living at Mariageldry, five miles from Kyeamba. John was the local carpenter and smith no doubt doing a wide range of activities while also running a wheat farm. My grandmother, Edith Avis (nee Colley), told my mother that William Henry Colley used to carve the horses for Simmonds Carousal. Two of them just fitted into the front room of their home. He also made the first travelling live-in van for Barnham & Bailey. The Simmonds Company was in Scotland when something went wrong with a piece of equipment so they wrote to the firm William Henry Colley worked for requesting that he travel to Scotland to carry out the repair. However the firm for which William Colley worked sent another employee. On arrival in Scotland this employee was asked who he was and promptly sent back that employee with the message that they wanted the services of William Colley. COOK James (Jnr) Wheelwright 1872: James Cook (Jnr), wheelwright. Born in 1872, Devon, England. James (Jnr) followed his father into the Wheelwright business. James is seen in census of 1891, 1901 and 1911 in the village of Sticklepath. In WW1, he was Sapper J Cook, #103938, in the Royal Engineers. His records survive in the "burnt series". He was a specially enlisted wheelwright, given pay of 5 shillings a day. He was posted to Salonika with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He died on February 16th 1942 (Probate). At the baptisms of his children in 1871, 1873, and 1875 Richard is described as a wheelwright; in 1878 he is a carpenter and in 1879 an innkeeper. Census 1881: Richard Dallow, licensed victualler, wheelwright and blacksmith, living with wife, four children, mother-in-law and servant at the Wellington Inn. Census 1891: Richard, widower, licensed victualler, wheelwright, and four children living at the Wellington Inn. In June 1892, Richard married Sarah J Obee in London. Richard died 8 August 1897, aged 57. He is described as wheelwright and blacksmith of Chance’s-pitch leaving an estate of £263. DEFORD Henry Stephen Wheelwright,Blacksmith 1846: Henry Stephen Deford, wheelwright, blacksmith. Born in 1846 USA. Parents: James Deford and Elizabeth Rollison. He learned his trade from George E. Lambert, who operated a carriage shop in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. In 1893, Henry was operating a wheelwright shop out of the Lambert carriage shop, with Ned Ringgold (also in the Blacksmith Index) operating the blacksmith shop. Henry is listed as a blacksmith/wheelwright in the 1870 and 1873 Kent County Directories and the 1903 Maryland Directory. Henry never married and lived for many years with his unmarried sister Kate. His household at times also inlcuded a widowed aunt and a motherless cousin. In the Kent News of 28 April 1934: Henry Deford, one of Chestertown's oldest citizens, has been quite ill at his home in Chestertown. Henry died in May 1935. He is my great grand uncle and his parents are my great great grandparents. His sister, Mary Elizabeth Deford, married my great grandfather, William Samuel Elburn. He was a Master Blacksmith living and working at Manchester Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport (this being Lancashire in the first half of the century and Cheshire in the latter half). Two of Isaac's sons became blacksmiths, and one became a wheelwright. Isaac died in 1872, but his wife and sons were still running the business in 1891. EDON (HAYDON) Frederick Wheelwright, Blacksmith 1858: Frederick Edon(Haydon), wheelwright, blacksmith. Born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON "visitor" aged 3 in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. Unfortuantely, no name or email address supplied.

Baptised 1st September 1834 at New Jerusalemite Church Summer Lane, Parish of St George Birmimgham. Died 17th November 1883, Kapunda South Australia. Buried 18th November 1883, Kapunda Cemetery . First went to New York with his parents William Harrison and Ann Morley who were Whale Bone Ruler Makers ; and then to South Australia arriving 9th May 1854 per the ship "Flavius" from Singapore. Joseph married Margaret Shanks on 29th May 1854 in Adelaide SA & they raised 12 children. Occupations included Whale Bone Ruler Maker in Warwick and New York. Policeman in Adelaide SA. Wheelwright & Blacksmith in Kapunda SA. Engineer in Kapunda SA. He was considered to be rather brilliant in his chosen field of steam driven vehicles and highly respected as an Engineer. HAYDON (EDON) Frederick Wheelwright, Blacksmith 1858: Frederick Haydon or Edon wheelwright, blacksmith. was born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON "visitor" aged 3 in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. Unfortuantely, no name or email address supplied.

His business was "The Original Blacksmith and Wheelwright establishment" on the corner of Kent and Adelaide Sts Maryborough. Walter came to South Africa when he was twelve years old with his father to help the British Military with their wagons and fixed their wheels. William Wright 1960: was a friend of Arthur`s, they did their wheelwright apprenticeship together at Kelleton with Mr. Harradon. Arthur completed his blacksmith apprenticeship under Mr.W Dunn who he worked for and from whom he rented the Forge at Stokenham before eventually buying it in 1963 for £1000,including the house. During the evacuation of 1943 the Forge at Stokenham was moved to a temporary site in a barn at Beeson belonging to either Rich Foale or John Honeywell. MULLINS Arthur William Wheelwright,Blacksmith 1848: Arthur William Mullins, wheelwright, blacksmith. Born in 1848 in Alphington near Exeter, Devon, England. Arthur emigrated from Devon to South Australia at the age of 8, began 3 year apprenticeship with William Pfuhl of Darlington at age of 16. The trade he learned was that of a wheelwright which included blacksmithing. He worked as a wheelwright at Port Wakefield, then after a gap of 2 years was the blacksmith at the Kapunda copper mine. The frequently wet conditions led to him developing severe arthritis and he left the trade and returned to Happy Valley where he and his wife grew and sold fruit and vegetables. NEWTON John Wheelwright, Blacksmith 1859: John Newton, blacksmith & wheelwright. Born 1859 in Earlsheaton, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England. Married Martha Clafton in 1881 & they emigrated to Canada soon after but returned when Martha was homesick. They lived in Low Road Hanging Heaton, and later on Commonside Hanging Heaton where he ran the Smithy, his sign read "John Newton Wheelwight and Smith Hanging Heaton" For the images provided, see the LINK on the homepage for Interesting Stories. John is also listed in the Blacksmiths of Yorkshire Index. They had 4 children only 2 survived- Eliza and Herbert. Eliza's daughter Ida Morton was my grandma. Herbert served in WW1 he survived that and died the day before I was born in 1955. Ida married John Shannon at Ebenezer Chapel Hanging Heaton. There is one Edward Paddon born about 1830, but he is a shipwrights apprentice, not a wheelwright. It is possible that this it is the same person.

PEARSON George Solomon Wheelwright 1870: George Solomon Pearson, blacksmith, wheelwright, carriage builder. Listed in Blacksmiths of Leicesterhsire, Cartwrights and wheelwrights Indexes. Born and baptised at Frisby on the Wreake, Leicestershire, the second son of Blacksmith Matthew Pearson and his wife Sarah. George Solomon was apprenticed to his father about 1870. Each year he produced an Apprentice Piece, each one more complex than the last. Four of these are owned by his great grandson. In 1879 he married Emma Mason at Frisby and by 1881 they were living in Leicester where he was a Wheelwright. In 1885 they had moved back to Frisby, where he assisted his father who died in 1891. Between 1891 when he was Forman Wheelwright to 1901 when he was a Carriage Builder, the family lived again in Leicester. George Solomon died in 1909 at Leicester and is buried in the churchyard at Frisby. His sons did not follow their father's profession, although his second son George Harry Pearson was a capable amateur metal worker, presumably using skills taught him by his father . PILGRIM Herbert William Wheelwright,Blacksmith 1878: Herbert William Pilgrim, wheelwright, blacksmith. Born in 1878 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. He married Alice May Sewell in 1899 and they moved to London. They had seven children. Census record of 1901 show they lived at 118 Corlton Road, St Pancras, London. He left his family in Jan of 1911 to go to South Africa - East London Port bound for Cape Town. Passenger record shows his trade being a Wheelwright Smith. We don\'t know if the plan was for his family to join him once he'd settled or he just abandoned them? Sadly, we also don't know what happened to him. Pitchford was supposed to have been involved in the building of several bridges over River Murray in South Australia but haven't been able to confirm this. PLUMMER Arnold Wheelwright 1883: Arnold Plummer, wheelwright. Born in 1883 in Ringland, Norfolk, England. In 1901 he was living in Mattishall in Norfolk working as an apprentice wheelwright. By 1911 he was working in Long Stratton in Norfolk as a wheelwright employed by my great grandfather, Benjamin Reeve (see Blacksmiths of Norfolk). RINGGOLD William Edward (Ned) Wheelwright,Blacksmith 1862: William Edward (Ned) Ringgold, blacksmith, wheelwright. Born 29th March 1862 on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, md. In the 1880 census, he is listed as an apprentice wheelwright with Henry P. Jones on Kent Island. In 1893, Ned and his wife, Susanna "Annie" Arters, moved to Chestertown, Kent County, Maryland. Ned worked with Henry S. Deford at the G.E. Lambert Carriage Building on Cannon Street in Chestertown. Ned eventually owned and operated his own blacksmith/wheelwright shop on Court Street in Chestertown. A newspaper clipping from 26 February 1938 Entitled ‘57 years spent as a blacksmith ‘ notes that Ned predicted he had shod 114,000 horses. He announced his retirement and said that Marion Parsons would take over his blacksmithing duties. Ned died 4th December 1938 and another newspaper clipping entitled ‘ late W. E. Ringgold's Will devides (sic) estate’ lists his two daughters as Heiresses; my grand aunt, Ethel Baum Ringgold Miller and my grandmother, Molly Rebecca Ringgold Elburn. ROBERTS Herbert Wheelwright,Blacksmith 1843: Herbert Roberts, blacksmith and wheelwright. Born 26th February 1843, in Warbleton, Sussex, England to Robert and Elizabeth Roberts. Herbert married Esther Childs in 1867 and is shown working as a blacksmith in Chiddingstone (1871) and Otford (1881), both in Kent, before he settled in Eynsford from the 1891 census. He is described on his childrens wedding certificate as a wheelwright as well as blacksmith. He had 5 children: Rose, Emily, Arthur, Clement and Annie, and also raised Rose's son, also called Clement, as if his own son. Clement was my Great Grandfather. Herbert died 9th January 1912. By 1861, still in Beelsby she is listed as a wheelwright and Iron founder (some lady!). By 1871 she is an annuitant, living in Fotherby, Lincs., with her daughter Sarah Bratley and her husband Joseph Bratley (wheelwright). TYLER / TYLOR James Wheelwright, Blacksmith 1830: James Tyler Tylor, blacksmith, wheelwright. Born about 1830 as James George Taylor at Country Harbour Nova Scotia. In 1861 he married (1) Julia Long (she was the governess at Gingin, Western Australia). Under the name of Tyler he worked as a blacksmith. At some point Julia ran off with someone else, we don’t know what happened to her? James later married (2) Annie Louise Toovey in 1882 at Albany WA; they used the name Tylor and still do to this day (even though the correct spelling is Taylor). In 1880 (approx) James worked as a wheelwright in both Albany & Tenderden WA. Betwween 1883 & 1892 James & Annie owned a Smithy shop at Eticup (note: Eticup no longer exists; was near to Broomhill WA). After 1892 they moved to Katanning WA where James died in 1911. Annie, the district Midwife, died 1937, Katanning. Notes from a teachers report of Julia Long, shows James was a convict and he is believed to have been in WA since 1842. VINSON Reginald Stewart Wheelwright, Blacksmith, Ironworker & Farrier 1920: Reginald Stewart Vinson. In the 1920's he was a blacksmith,wheelwright,iron worker, he served his apprenticeship with Metters of Tavistock. His daughter Valerie says that her knowledge is a bit vague I'm afraid but it must have been about the late 1920s. At the time Reginald lived at Devon Great Consols Lamerton. We however shifted to quite a few moorland villages as the work dried up. When the horse was supplanted by the tractor he went to work at Devonport dockyard and was sent to Gibraltar just after WW2. He also served as a farrier in the North Devon Hussars . Reginald is also listed in the Blacksmiths of Devon, Ironworkers, Farriers & Military Indexes. VOIGHT Johannes Carl Wheelwright & Blacksmith 1880: Johannes Carl Voigt, blacksmith & wheelwright. He went by the name of John Charles Voight as it sounded less German. Born in 1880 in Queensland, Australia. Died in 1964 in New Zealand. He came to New Zealand with his family after his mother died in1885? When first in NZ he worked for Turnbulls as a wheelwright at Waikiwi and Invercargill. In 1901 John went of to the Boer War along with another man named Watts (who later, in 1905, married John’s sister Ruth Voight). In 1907 John had a blacksmith business in Waipahi which he kept until 1913; then the family moved to Pleasant Point, near Timaru. His main business here was on the main street near the town hall. The only other Smithy in the area was in Totara Valley and this was managed by a Mr. Anderws. In 1919 John bought a farm of 400 acres not far from Albury. He sold the farm in the 1950s and retired to Geraldine. He was one of those men who was already ready to help others out; he was also a great Church man. In WW1 he was the local recruiting officer. WINTON James Wheelwright,Carpenter 1793: James Winton, carpenter and wheelwright. Born in Kent, some time between 1793 and 1801, in the neighbourhood of Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells. Three charges were brought against James at the Lent Assizes at Maidstone in Kent on 17 March 1817. The jury decided that James was guilty and he was sentenced to be "hanged by the neck until he is dead". He was reprieved and sentenced to transportation for fourteen years. Arriving in NSW as a convict aboard the ship "Larkins" , James went on to live a useful and productive life in Wilberforce NSW as a carpenter and wheelwright. See him listed in both the Wheelwrights Index and the Fingersmiths Index. An interesting and informative account of his life has been compiled by his great great granddaughter.
