Mary Keefe and Patrick Hogan

Hogan

Patrick Hogan was born about 1816 in County Clare, Ireland. His wife Mary was the daughter of Patrick Keefe and Johanna Ryan.  She was born about 1830 in County Clare.

According to the 1900 census, Mary had 10 children, but only 8 are known.

Bridget 1846-?, Michael Joseph @1848-1925, Patrick 1851-1934, John, Mary E. 1857-1913, Margaret 1860-1942, Ann 1862-?, Elizabeth 1865-?.

There is a grave marker for Frank Hogan 1863-1918 at Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul.  The cemetery records do not have him buried there.  He may be one of the unknown children.  Family lore says John died at sea on the way to America.

The older children were probably born in County Clare.  No records were found for them in Limerick.  Records of baptisms exist for Patrick, Mary, Elizabeth and Ann in Limerick City.

Bridget was married to Maurice Buckley at St. Mary’s Church, Limerick City.  Their daughter Catherine was born there.

The children of Patrick and Mary married as follows:  Bridget married Maurice Buckley; Michael Joseph married Bridget Whalen; Patrick married three times: Bridget McHugh, Sarah Driscoll and Ellen Lahey Ryan; Mary E. married Francis J. Kennedy;  Maggie married Michael Driscoll; Ann married John White; and Elizabeth married John Murray.

According to family lore, Michael came first.  He was sent over to America because he was “getting too thick” with a girl of whom his mother didn’t approve.

He may have arrived as early as 1868.  His father probably arrived in 1873.  They may have lived in Mahanoy City before coming to Minnesota.  Bridget Hogan Buckley and her family lived in Mahanoy City.

It appears that Bridget Hogan Buckley and her husband Maurice separated.

He lived in St. Paul at the time of his death.  She appears in the 1900 census in Mahanoy without him.  Her children were Catherine who married John Cronin; Mary, Patrick and Maurice.

Patrick Hogan and family appear in the 1875 Minnesota State Census for Harvey Township, Meeker County.  They probably ended up there because of Mary’s cousin, John O’Keefe who lived there.

By 1881, they were living in St. Paul and remained there for the rest of their lives.  Patrick was a laborer.  He also worked for the railroad.  Mary ran a boarding house for railroad workers and took in laundry.

Michael, my ancestor, married Bridget Whalen on 10 Jan 1876 at the Cathedral of St. Paul.  By 1880 they were living in Swift County.  Several of the children, including my grandfather, James, were born in Camp Lake.  Family lore says they were “burned out” at DeGraff and moved to St. Paul.

Michael and Bridget’s children were:  Mary married Ernest L. Porte; James J. married twice:  Clare Strieker and Catherine M. Morehead; Thomas Henry married Julia Kalka; Catherine married Nick Frys; Lill married twice:  Lou Rancour and Krumweide; Genevieve married Nicholas Stadfield and Florence (adopted daughter) married George Crum.
