Samuel WHITE Settlement Examination: 1811


The Examination of Samuel WHITE of the parish of Ticknall in the said County of Derby,Labourer, taken upon oath before us his Majestys Justices of the Peace in and for the said County this Eleventh Day of January 1811 touching the place of his Settlement.

Who saith that he is about 35 years of age was born at Ticknall aforesaid of Parents residing there but belonging to Belton in the County of Leicester

That soon after Examinant's Birth, he hath been informed by his father, that the Township of Belton gave the parish of Ticknall a Certificate with Examinant's Father and his family. That when he, Examinant, was about 14 years of age he was hired to James MATTHEWS of the Parish of Repton, Farmer, from Christmas till the Old Michaelmas following and served the same. Then was hired to William ASTLE of Whitemoor in the County of Stafford for 51 weeks and served the same

Then was hired to Godfrey TUNALEY of the Township of Horninglow in the said County of Stafford, Farmer, for 51 weeks and served the same. That about a week previous to the expiration of the last Term a conversation took place between Examinant and his Master, Tunaley, respecting stopping again and Examinant was again hired to Mr Tunaley for another term of 51 weeks at the same time his master saying there must be an odd week between the two hirings for which he would give him One shilling and six pence. That at the end of the first term of 51 weeks he received his wages for such service and at the end of the odd week the said sum of One shilling and six pence then entered upon his second hiring for 51 weeks and served the same.

Then was hired to a Mr LATHBURY of Horninglow aforesaid for 51 weeks and served the same. Then was hired to Mr DETHICK of Willington in the said County for 51 weeks and served the same. That about a week previous to the expiration of the last Term Mr Dethick again hired him for 51 weeks at the same time saying he must continue in his place and he would pay him for the odd week meaning an odd week between the two hirings. That he accordingly continued in his place and received 3/4 (ie 3 shillings & 4 pence), for the odd week when he entered upon his second term of 51 weeks and served the same.

Then was hired to Mrs GLOVER of the Potlocks for 51 weeks and served such Term. That he was then married to his late wife Catherine, by whom he had two children now living viz; Charles aged about twelve years and Sarah aged about ten years. That about six years ago he was married to his present wife Lydia, by whom he has 3 children viz; Mary aged five years, Thomas aged 3 years and Benjamin aged about 18 months. That he has no Estate of his own, never rented any Tenement of the annual value of Ten Pounds nor served any Parochial or annual Office. That he is now chargeable to the Parish of Ticknall aforesaid And further saith not.
