LEONORA MAY BLAU

 

Leonora May Blau was born March 18, 1878 in Girard, Alabama, and named after her mother. She married Dr. John Pickney Norris on July 8, 1903. John Pickney Norris was born on October 30, 1864 in Quitman, Georgia, the son of Margaret Adaline O'Brian and James Pickney Norris. Dr. Norris was a physician and surgeon in the Columbus-Phenix City area for 35 years. After his death, Leonora continued living in the home until she fell and broke a leg at age 98. She spent the next 11 years at Pine Manor Nursing Home in Columbus. She remained intellectually sharp until her death at age 109. She was visited frequently by reporters and by Columbus College students interested in the history of Columbus. She made several tape recordings for the oral history project of Columbus College. Leonora May Blau Norris died on September 6, 1987 at age 109 (Columbus Enquirer, September 7, 1987, p 1). Dr. John Pickney Norris died on July 21, 1925 at age 60. They are buried in Linwood Cemetery.
