Letter to Mr. Fleak, LETTERS & MEMOS: Date: 6 August 1864. Might be employed, as a Scout to report from Salt Lake or Laramie, what now he discovered in route in this way he could know transportation with troops or train. ******************************************************************************** Date: 11 August 1864. (See enclosed letter dated August 6, 1864) Aug 6th 1864 Mr. Dear Fleak,
I wrote pen is few days since last I do not recollect think I wrote open of a matter that I intended to write about.
My son (ref. Wm ?) who is mail agent in the ( Keokuck Tuckers ? ) thinks that he is consumption and as his sister and brother have both died with those disease-it claims him. We have determined to go to California. I think that I shall try and get him to Winter in Salt Lake. That is undoubtedly one of the most healthy climates in the world. It is hard work for him to earn the money to pay his expenses out. I thought that Mr. Curtis might have something for him to do as might be able to give him a passage (?) with horse train. If he could it would be of great service in this emergency _______ _______ and let me know. Your Most ___________ Hawkins Taylor
