Taylor for the last three or four years, until last spring when he left these parts, that he has always been considered a bad and dangerous man and since this present rebellion he has been a secessionist and we have never known it disputed and we now believe that said Taylor has been in the brush the Last summer bushwhacking and further that when it was reported that he was in the Vicinity of St. Dervin that the citizens turned out in mass to hunt him out but were unable to find him.

William Taylor, the defendant being duly sworn makes
Statement as follows: In July 1862 I entered into bond and took Oath of Allegiance at St. Joseph, Missouri. My home was then in Nebraska. Where I returned immediately after; and continued to live there until the last days of March 1863 and left there because I was turned out and had reason to believe I would be killed, I was not at home a weeks when I had reasons, from report, that to fear being waylaid and murdered. I was at last notified by a man whose name I forget, to leave within two days or they (he and his associates) would take my scalp- While I was in St. Joseph in _ism (prison?) previous to giving bond, my wife was notified to leave but I told her not to do so. I have lost everything and have come here to endeavor by work to get a living-I am employed at Mr. Fisher's livery stable-I have 100 Cents of Wood at my place in Nebraska and I heard that some of those who pursued me have taken and sold it-I reckon that the men who chopped wood for me even the men who have been Mistaken for Bushwhackers. One of these men, who had been living with me went into the U. S. Services his name is Wm. Smith. Previous to his coming to work for me, he was in the 6 months service in Missouri. .........................................
