Notes for JAMES DOWNEY:
JAMES DOWNEY. This estimable gentleman, born in Virginia October 1, 1829, is the son of John and Mary(Good) Downey, who were also natives of Virginia. Leaving his parents in OH, he came with an uncle to Miami County, IN, where he landed October 9, 1848, with 75 cents in his pocket. That winter he went to school, and worked mornings and evenings for his uncle to pay his board, and after school closed he worked out his tuition.

After doing this, he went to work for his uncle during the summer. The next season he rented his uncle's farm, and in two years he saved enough to pay for forty acres of land, which he purchased in Howard County. After a short visit to Missouri, he sold his land in Howard County, and again rented the same farm from his aunt, his uncle having died in the meantime. He then conducted this farm for seventeen years.

During this time, he purchased 160 acres of land in Starke County. In 1874 he sold the tract of land, and with the proceeds purchased the farm that he now owns. This land with the exception of seven or eight acres, was still covered with the original forest, and presented a forbidding aspect to the agriculturist; but with the indomitable pluck of a sturdy back woodsman, and the skill of a good farmer. Mr. Downey has placed seventy acres of the 100 he now owns under cultivation. During the past year, he has removed from the farm to Ijamsville, leaving the farm in the care of his son Walter, who married Emma Purdy in 1881. Mr. Downey was married September 5, 1852. The lady who thus bacame the chosen companion of his life was Miss Amanda E. Martindale, born in Wayne County, IN May 17, 1834 and the daughter of Jesse and Barbary (Chenoweth) Martindale.

The results of this union were six children, four of whom, Sarah L., Mary J., Walter S., and Edwin E., are still living. Mr. and Mrs. Downey are members of the Chritian Church, and are highly respected by all who know them.(From the History of Wabash 1884).

The entire house was tastefully decorated with autumn leaves and autumn
flowers. The red and gold charmingly arranged about the doors and windows.

The spirit of this celebration was enriched and appropriate sentiment was created by the rendering of a poem entitled "The Golden Wedding" written by Rev. E. J. Peacock and read by Mrs. F. F. Costell, after which Rev. Peacock gave a very pleasing address, and introducing J. M. Perry who made a short address.

Good cheer was added to the evening's entertainment by refreshments of ice cream and cake served by some of their children and grand children. At this time a most beautiful wedding cake of gold and pure white was brought in and served by the bride.

The wedding was honored by about fifty guests of whom C. L. Alger and family of Servia, IN, D. M. Alger and wife also of IN and Mrs. E. E. Downey of Southern, IN, Mr. and Mrs. J. Alger and two children and Mrs. Audley Wilson and two children of Toledo, WA, Mrs. Leo Brehm of Cadillac, Michigan were the out of town guests.

Mr. and Mrs. Alger were the recipients of many beautiful gifts among which were a twenty dollar gold coin from five of the children, ten dollar gold coin from Tustin people and a two and one-half dollar gold coin from a lady friend in Cadillac, a beautiful davenport from some of the children and many other articles which will also recall the memories of the evening so eventful in their lives.

The departure of the guests with the sincere handshakes of friendship was
marked in each case by the high esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Alger are held, and congratulations with best wishes for their future were extended them and with their many friends The Tustin Times joins in with congratulations and trusting there may be for them many returns of this joyous wedding day.

Ivora, worked in the Vancouver shipyards during World War 2 as a burner out on the ways, she was known as "Boots" the burner. That is where she met Jay. The years us kids were growing up in she used to carry a suitcase filled with greeting cards, and christmas cards to sell so that us kids could have a christmas. She walked or took a bus where ever she went, she was in her late forties when she learned to drive a car and get her license. She sold Avon for about 7 yrs.

She and Jay had a large chicken farm, they usually had around 10,000 hens. They both had there own egg route. I, (Betty Lou Mackmer Hart) worked for them gathering eggs, etc. It was a 7 day a week job.

Ivora and Lou were Divorced September 2, 1941. She raised all 6 kids by herself with no help from anyone, and did a good job. She loved to draw, and make little craft things. Ivora and her sister Lozetta belonged to the Royal Neighbors Lodge for many years and held various offices. When ever anyone came to the house mom would play Parcheesi with them.

Ivora, got her nickname from wearing her big brothers boots when she was 5 years old. Ivora, was the one that started the family picnics at Lewisville park.
