The names , birth dates, and death dates of James Boatwright, his wives, children, and their children, are drawn from a variety of sources, the most reliable of which are bible entries. Elizabeth Blackburn Boatwright, the wife of James' oldest son Benoni, called Benjamine, recorded births, deaths, and marriages, including those of some of the family slaves, in her Bible. The entries are somewhat haphazard and are not complete for each family line, but it must be assumed that what is written is correct, particularly since much of the material is corroborated by other sources.

My copy of the entries in Elizabeth's Bible was sent to me by Dennis Guy Boatright of Texas. He had received a copy of the pertinent pages of Elizabeth's Bible from Denny Boatright of Missouri. The actual bible was last known to be in the possession of Mrs. Joe Adams, a grand daughter of William Letcher Todd and Eliza Ann Boatwright Todd.

Chesley Hood Boatwright, the youngest son of James, had a bible, last believed to be in the possession of Clara Boatright Laningham of Arkansas, ( Hubert Boatright Of Arkansas now has this Bible) in which were found two neatly folded sheets of paper containing a list of all of the children of James Boatwright and their birth dates. I received a Xerox copy of this list from my grandmother, Verna Boatright Milstead, and from Dennis Guy Boatright. At the bottom of the list is written, "The above register was drawn from his Father's family bible by his youngest son February 5th, 1843." It is signed "C. H. Bootright."

I have chosen to accept the dates and the spellings of names as shown in these bible entries as correct. Where there is any discrepancy or disagreement, the alternative opinion will be mentioned and clearly labeled as to source.

It should be noted, however, that the spelling of the surname itself is a cause of confusion. In most sources, one finds that the name as used by the early members of the family is spelled Boatwright. Generally, although not in all cases, the "w" was dropped in later generations. However, in the following will of James, written in 1814, the name is spelled "Boatright" throughout. The reason could be that the will was written by an attorney for James and, as seems to be the custom of the times, he spelled the name the way he saw fit. Nonetheless, in a handwritten list of siblings and their birth dates compiled by James' youngest son, Chesley Hood, Chesley spells the name "Bootright". In Elizabeth Blackburn's Bible, the name is spelled both "Boatwright" and "Boatright." To make the matter even more uncertain, she spells the surname of her husband Benjamine, James' oldest son, without the "w" as she does James'. She also spells her married name without the "w" in the Bible, but on her tombstone the "w" is included.

Inconsistency abounds in the spelling of the Boat(w)right name, particularly in this line of the family. It seems best not to become too concerned over the spelling of the surname, realizing that our earlier ancestors seemed to have spelled it as the mood struck them on any given day.

WILL OF JAMES BOATWRIGHT OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA.

The following will of James Boatwright can be found in the Cumberland County, Virginia, Circuit Court records, Will Book 5, Page 86:

"In the name of God amen, knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, I James Boatright of Cumberland County and State of Virginia, being in my right mind and of disposing memory, do make this my last will and testament.

1st. I give to my son Leonard Boatright, my island on the James River known by the name of Daniels Iland and also my Punch Creek tract of land by him paying in two years after my death two hundred dollars to my estate, to him and his heirs forever.

2nd. I give to my son John Boatright my tract of land in the County of Fluvanna, which I purchased of Mathew Wills, containing one hundred and twenty four acres be the same more or less, by him paying fifty dollars in two years to my estate after my death, to him and his heirs forever.

3rdly. I give to my son Chestly Boatright my tract of land on which I live, of one hundred and nineteen acres be the same, as also my still and still vessels provisor that the said Chestly Boatright lets my daughter Drucilla Boatright remain in the mansion house on said plantation with him after my death and boarding free until she marrys, to him and his heirs forever.

4thly. I give to each of my children as they may need that have not received heretofore one bed and furniture.

5thly. I give to my son Drury Boatright ten dollars in addition to what I have deeded him proviso that he obligates himself to give free liberty or use of the spring called Drummons.

6thly. I give the balance of all my estate not heretofore mentioned or willed, to be equally divided between my sons Samuel Boatright, James Boatright, Benj'n Boatright, Daniel Boatright, and William Boatright and my daughters Ann Steger, Judith Martin, Drucilla Boatright, Patsy Boatright, and Polly Boatright, giving to my son Samuel my negro Tarlton at valuation, giving to my son James Boatright my negro George at valuation, giving to my daughter Ann Steger my negro Sally at valuation, giving to my son William Boatright my negro Nelson at valuation, giving to my daughter Judith Martin my negro Julia at valuation, and giving to my daughter Drucilla Boatright my negro Cloe at valuation, each of them paying the overplus should there be any at the division and, lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my sons Benjamin, Samuel, Leonard, and Chestly Boatright Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made.

It is apparent from the signature at the end of this will that James, for all his land and property holdings, was unable to read and write. As he obviously did not write this will himself, it would account for the misspellings, particularly of family members. The names of his children Chesley and Drucillah, are spelled incorrectly throughout this document. The accurate and correct spelling of these names is well documented in letters, bible records, etc., some of which are written by the same family members whose names are misspelled in the will.

Nonetheless, I have reproduced the will from a microfilm copy of the original, handwritten document, complete with misspellings and grammatical errors, as accurately as I am able for the sake of maintaining the integrity of the will as originally written.

It is interesting to note that the "Daniel's Iland" willed to his son Leonard can be found on a current (1998) map of Cumberland County and is now known as "Boatwright's Island".

The name is biblical, from Genesis 35:18: "As she breathed her last-for she was dying-she named her son Ben-Oni, but his father named him Benjamin."

Norman Hurd Ricker indicates that records reflect Benjamin served as a Private in Captain Hudson M. Wingfield's Infantry Company of the 4th Virginia Regiment from 03/16/1814-04/11/1814 at Norfolk, Virginia. He also served as a Private in Captain Jesse Woodson's Company of the 1st Regiment at Holly Springs from 10/01/1814-to 11/04/1814 as a substitute for Richard Boatright. Without prior approval of the Court, Elizabeth moved the family and Estate Property of Benjamin to Kentucky; leaving her Uncle William Blackburn responsible under bond to the Court for administration of the Estate, and without the ability to perform. William Blackburn took legal action to protect his bond.

To the Honorable Judge of the Garrard (County KY) Circuit Court in Chancery sitting, the orator, William Blackburn, complaining, showeth unto your honor that Benjamin Boatright, late of Powhatan County Virginia, departed this life intestate on the day of June, 1816 in said County of Powhatan, and on the 17th day of July 1816, Elizabeth Boatright, his widow, who is made defendant hereto, qualified as his Administratrix in the County Court of said County and then and there entered into an Administration Bond with George Mosely and your orator, as her securities in the penalty of 5,000 dollars a copy of which bond for greater certainty is here exhibited marked Exhibit A. The personal estate constituting appoints and then have aforesaid addition was appraised to 2,674.60 dollars as will appear by reference to a certified copy of said appraisement here exhibited and marked B. Decedent at his death left the following children, the following heirs to wit: Martha, James, William, Eliza, Allen, RhodeAnne, Lucy, and Benjamin Boatright. The last five of whom are infants. About three years ago, said Administrator, with the said children, who are also made defendants, removed to Garrard County, in Kentucky, without having returned any Inventory of said estate, or have made any settlement thereof with the County Court of Powhatan, that he knows of, and bringing with her all or most of the said estate, or its proceeds, she made no allotment for distribution of said estate among said children, but is managing and disposing of the same, as if it were her own.

Your orator is apprehensive that said estate may be wasted or illegally and improvidently managed to his eventual injury as security as aforesaid. By removal to Kentucky said Elizabeth has become unexcessible by the County Court of Powhatan. In this predicament your orator does not only endanger of ultimate liability and loss as security but is removeless except in your Court of Chancery.

In tender consideration whereof and as he is remidiless at law, he prays interposition of your Honor he prays that defendant may be compelled to answer this bill. He prays that you will restrain by interposition from sellers or otherwise, putting out of her hands said property or any part thereof until this bill be heard and disposed of, he prays that on the final hearing your Honor will make said injunction perpetual or take said estate out of the possession of said Administrator unless you will indemnify your orator aforesaid any liability as security as aforesaid, that you will compel said heirs to make distribution among them-selves of the said estate liable to such distribution or waive any claim hereafter on your orator as security as aforesaid. And that you will grant such other and faithful relief as may be just and proper.

Notes for ELIZABETH BLACKBURN:

According to Denny Boatright, the original Boatwright Homestead was purchased by Benjamin Daniel Boatwright, the youngest son of Benjamine (Benoni) and Elizabeth Blackburn Boatwright, on August 31, 1835. His mother, Elizabeth, lived in the house until she died in 1862. The property consisted of 175.4 acres and the log house and the sale is recorded in Madison County Deed Book W, page 100.

On June 30, 1852, the Homestead and property was deeded to Alexander A. Boatwright, another son, by the other children and heirs. Alexander was a widower at that time and lived with his mother, Elizabeth, and his daughter, Eliza Ann. Alexander was an ordained Baptist minister. The property and homestead were deeded to his daughter, who had married William Letcher Todd, upon Alexander's death in 1885.

After the death of Eliza in 1920, Madison County Deed Book 95, pages 327-329, indicate that the homestead was deeded to one of her sons, Thomas A. Todd. Todd and his family made the property their home until 1928 and also acquired an additional, adjoining 79.66 acre farm known as the "Miracle Place".

In 1928 the farm was sold to Thomas Todd's brother, George Boatwright Todd, as recorded in Madison County Deed Book 106, page 598. Todd apparently lived there until 1950 when the land was sold to Harold E. Richardson for $28,000. George as the last of the Boatwrights or their descendants to own the property.

On December 2, 1973, Richardson sold the farm to J.W. Ramsey for $102,000. During Ramsey's ownership, the old homestead went to ruin and the solid walnut logs were sold off. The only thing remaining is the main rock chimney.

Notes for WILLIAM BOATWRIGHT:

Various dates of birth have been found for William. We use the date shown, May 29, 1784, as this is the date found in his father's bible, as recorded by his youngest brother, Chesley Hood Boatright. A xerox copy of this recording is in my possession.

The 1850 Madison County, Arkansas, census, from which the list of William's children by his second wife is taken, indicates that he was 63 years of age in 1850. This would make his birth year 1787 rather than 1784, but we regard his father's bible records as more accurate than the census.

It should also be noted that the 1850 census records his second wife's age as 41 in 1850. We show a date of birth for this wife, Nancy Morgan, as February 15, 1804, which would make her about 46 years of age when the census was taken rather than 41 as shown in the census records.

Unfortunately, the source for Nancy's date of birth was lost before it was recorded with these records, so we cannot positively verify her actual date of birth.

The 1850 census also records the fact that Elizabeth Waits, age 6; John Waits, age 4; and John Wells, age 19, were all living in William's household in 1850.

He also states that the 1840 Census of Cumberland County shows 1 son between 10-14 years of age and 1 between 20-29 years old.

Finally, the 1850 Census indicates only 1 child at home, a daughter, Mary, born 1826-27.

It is unclear why Mary didn't show up in the earlier census records.

Chesley Boatright was a native of Virginia, and came to Madison County as a missionary of the Baptist Church when the country was but sparsely settled. He established the first Baptist Church in Northwest Arkansas, and was one of the best known men in the Cherokee Nation."

Chesley Hood Boatright was ordained a Baptist minister in 1833 at the Hebron Church, Knox County, Tennessee.

The Boatwright And Allied Families

His home in Gentry County, Missouri was used by the Primitive Baptist Congregation for a meeting house, and was the first meeting house in Gentry County west of the Grand River.

There was a large one room log cabin in the yard of the farm a short distance from the main building. This cabin was occupied by the family's colored woman, whom they called "Aunt Riar," her name was Mariah. Aunt Riar had been a slave of the family in Kentucky, and when asked if she would like to go to Missouri with William, is supposed to have answered, "of course, I want to come with them, Marse William is my boy for I raised him." Aunt Riar went with William and his family to Missouri, leaving her children and friends in Kentucky, not as a slave, but as a trusted member of the household. During the Civil War, she is supposed to have kept William's money in a secret hiding place for him, and he had to ask her for it whenever he needed some money. The purpose of this was to enable William to say that he did not have any money whenever marauders came. Aunt Riar died in her cabin, the date is not known, and is buried in the Old Boatright Cemetery about two miles from Darlington, Gentry County, Missouri.

Benjamine Daniel was a farmer and owned several slaves. He was a Master Mason and secretary of Masonic Lodge# 183, Kirksville, Madison County, Kentucky, from 1849 to 1878. He lived and worked on his farm.

He married a second time to a spinster, Eliza Johnson. They had no children and are believed to have moved late in life to Danville, Kentucky. No information is currently available as to the date of marriage or if the marriage was the result of the death of his first wife, Jalia, or a divorce.

The Boatwright homestead is located in Madison County, Kentucky, about 2-3 miles northeast of Paint Lick on the Paint Lick-Berea highway. It is not known for sure when or where he died, but Ricker, in his notes on the Boat(w)right Family of the Southeastern United States gives the date of death as 1889 in Paint Lick, Kentucky.

Jalia's mother was Rhoda Ann Blackburn Patterson, the sister of Benjamine Daniel's mother, Elizabeth Blackburn.

There has been some dispute among researchers over the spelling of Jalia's first name with many assuming that her name should have been "Julia", but Dennis Guy Boatright is in possession of a photograph of her tombstone and the name is clearly spelled "Jalia".

The following was received from Deborah Yvonne Wilson Fehr, who credits

much of the research to her cousin, Tammy Fraley.

Harvey was born in Anderson County, TN. Harvey Woodson was married in Campbell County Tennessee March 22, 1845, to Lavinna Keeney she was born about 1825 in Tennessee. This is

documented in the Marriage records at the Campbell County records at

Jacksboro, TN. Most of what I have came from Tammy Fraley a descendant of

Mary Leah Louisa (Lear) Boatright, daughter of Harvey. Tammy is her great

granddaughter. A lot of the information that she has came from family and

from the book History of Longfield Baptist Church, A Promise of Good Things

to Come. by Edith Wilson Hutton. If you have not seen this book, it is great

and full of family information. I obtained it for a brief time through the

interlibrary loan program.

About 1835 the family of Chesley Hood Boatright came to the Coal Creek area

(now called Lake City). Harvey joined the Mt. Pleasant (Indian Creek) Church

in Campbell County by letter at that time. In 1840 James, Mary Elizabeth,

Martha E. J. and Rietta joined the Longfield Baptist Church (first called the

Clear Branch Church).Chesley Hood and his wife were also there at that time.

In 1841 Chesley Hood was pastoring both Churches. In 1849 Harvey and Lavinna

were received by recantation to Indian Creek Church. Between October 1849 and

Early 1850, Harvey and family joined his father and family in Madison County,

Arkansas. By 1852 He was back in Campbell County, TN. They were received by

letter back into the Indian Creek Church in February of 1852.

Harvey died 11-1-1853 in Campbell County. Lavinna married Samuel Wilson Thomas on July 2,

1855, in Campbell County. Mary Leah Louisa went by the

name of Lear. She was born about 1847 and died 11-21-1893. She is buried in

an unmarked grave across from the Alexander Place in the Fletcher Brown

Hollow of Pinecrest Community, Jacksboro, Campbell, County, TN. John Thomas

(called Thomas) was married to Louisa Dabney in 1867 in Anderson County, TN.

Children of that marriage as listed in the 1880 Campbell County, Census, are

Rutha age 12, Laney age 9, Texas age 5. Rutha married ?? Ford and had a

daughter Beulah. John Thomas was said to have served in the Union Army in the

Civil War. He lived in a Home for Veterans and it is not know when or where

he died or is buried. Louisa is buried in the Dug Town Cemetery LaFollette,

Campbell County, TN. The headstone says Luiza Dabney wife of J. T. Boatright

b. 1848-d. 1901. I have no further information on this family.

Lavinna and Samuel Wilson Thomas had two children. Half brothers to Lear and

John Thomas were Squire Thomas born about 1857 and Wilson Thomas born about

1859. This is from the 1860 Campbell County census.

History of Benton County

WASHINGTON COUNTY.

Jacob Q. Johnson, one of the wealthy and successful citizens of Washington County, Ark., and the son of James and Mary (Queener) Johnson, was born in East Tennessee in 1828. The father was a native of North Carolina, and was of Dutch descent. He took an active part in the BlackHawk War, and served with great credit to his country. He was a farmer and miller by occupation, and moved from Tennessee to Arkansas in 1851. where he followed farming for some time. He located nine miles south of Fayetteville, and here he died in 1883, from injuries received from falling down stairs. His son, Jacob Q., was educated in his native State, and remained with his father until the war broke out, but previous to to this, in 1852, he married Miss R. J., daughter of C. H. Boatright, of Madison County, and to them were born thirteen children, nine now living: Mary Jane, Tennessee, J. Q., Harriet Eliza, Edna K., Catherine, Susan J., Benjamin F. and Dora H. In 1862 Mr. Johnson enlisted in the Federal army, Company B. First Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, commanded by Col. Harrison, and served three years, three months, and seven days. He was in the battle of Prairie Grove, was also in several skirmishes, but was never wounded or taken prisoner. After the war Mr. Johnson purchased his present home, which is one of the finest in the Northwest, and upon this farm he has erected a fine two-story brick residence, valued at $4,000, also a large sawmill, with grist mill and flouring-mill attached, which is run by a thirty-six foot water-wheel. The water is brought a distance of 500 yards to run the wheel. Mr. Johnson has also steam power attached to run the mill when the water is low or the mill is frozen up. This mill is valued at $20,000. Besides this Mr. Johnson is the owner of 800 acres of valuable land, and has over 200 acres under the plow. He is a member of the G. A. R., is a member of the Baptist Church, and is one of the most respected and enterprising citizens of the county.

Notes for JESSE STINSON BOATRIGHT:

Jesse Stinson Boatright moved from Missouri to Texas about 1860. In 1865 or early 1866, soon after the end of the War for Southern Independence, he moved to Van Buren, Arkansas, where he first went into the hotel business and later opened a general merchandise store on Log Town Hill, which is now part of Van Buren.

About 1880-1882 he moved to Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where he lived for several years before returning to Van Buren about 1891. About 1895 he bought a farm two miles east of Wagoner, Oklahoma, and remained there until his death in 1905. The old home place is now under Fort Gibson Lake.

Jesse was a teacher, farmer, and businessman. He taught in several schools in and near Van Buren, including the old Broadway School which was located at the intersection of Broadway and East Main Street. Many of the Boatright children and grandchildren attended the old Broadway before it was demolished and replaced with the building now (1997) used as city hall.

He was especially proficient in penmanship and at times taught this art to adults in night classes. In the latter part of his life he was connected to the Watts Association, which was organized for the purpose of enrolling all persons of Cherokee blood who could be located. His wife, Mollie, was 1/32 Cherokee.

James Allen Boatright, who is living in Gassville, Arkansas, in 1997, has stated that he believes Jesse enlisted in the Confederate Army with his brother, Francis Alexander, but deserted shortly thereafter and "went to Texas", where he stayed until the end of the war. Some documentation indicates that this may be true, but it has not been confirmed as yet.

Mr. Chester Howe, Atty. Eastern Cherokee Claims, Washington, D.C.

I am mailing to you an abstract of claims acted on and decided by the 4th Board of Comm. and accepted as Cherokees by Blood on the Rolls of 1835 as Eastern Cherokees…was furnished to me by ex-chief John Ross from his Father's Roll of 1835.

I also send you 8 true copies of affidavits of recognized Cherokee Indians in our case, the James Blackburn, Rhoda Blackburn (nee Baugh) and Polly Carter, their daughter who is on Roll of 1835. You will find on the Roll, Richard and Martha Blackburn who we suppose were James and Rhoda Blackburn’s grandson and daughter, the true copies of affidavits under seal of office was filed with the Dawes Comm. Sept. 10th 1896 with the case, as it was rejected, the case was appealed to the U.S. Court of the Western District of I.T., Muskogee, Judge Spri9nger, J. S. Boatright, being authorized agent of the Cherokee Indian Citizenship association & Atty…he laid the case before the Masters, they passed on the case a briefed it, the Judge would not sign it, saying we were non-residents, ignoring the decision of the Supreme Court of the U.S. that said the were Cherokee Indians let them reside where they may, so in the bounds of the U.S. and had indefeasable?? Rights to land & money of the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.

As Boatright had appointed me as his legal authorized agent, he wrote me he would appeal our case to the court of claims, he had about 1200 other claims he said he was not able to appeal all. Would make a test case of ours and asked my consent. I told him go ahead, it was some two year, he wrote me the Court had given a decision in our favor and had ordered the case filed with the Secretary of the Interior, he then wrote me as he was getting old and afflicted, he thought it best to turn over his claims to some other atty. and he spoke of M. M. Edmiston then of Viniti, IT, and did so, and recommended me to him as his authorized agent and he died not long after, as he had said the Court was behind two years or more, he did not expect to live to see it to an end. When the decision of Supreme (court) was given in favor of the Eastern and Western Cherokee 1905, and approved by Congress and appropriation made 1906, Edmiston wrote me sent me Power of Atty. for him and you with contract, doing away with all former contracts as I had got about 125 claims for Boatright - the letters commenced coming to me to take their claims at the 50% as they had agreed to give Boatright. I wrote Edmiston of their proposal to take their claims, he wrote me the 50% was too much…the government would kick he thought. Best for me and all to go ahead And get all the claims for him and you and you and him would allow me 10 percent of yours and his 25 percent which I agreed to. Is that right with you, that is for all that is allowed on any app. I got in 190 apps.

It does seem to me as this Blackburn, Baugh and Polly Carter Case has been passed on by the Masters, and Court of Claims, and as it was ordered filed with the Secretary of Interior. It probably was the Case carried to the Supreme Court of the U.S., that there should be any controversy about it.

I have seen some few letters from Comm. Guion Miller asking questions two of his, one to Milbus Fuller of Liberty, Clay County, Missouri saying you (sic) claim to your Grandfather Richard C. Fuller of N.C. was enrolled in 1835. ( I do not find his name on Roll) I know his name on Roll of 1835. I send you, you can see for yourself.

REPORT ON BOATRIGHT CASES

Case No. 7053:

There are a large number of applicants who claim the right to share in the distribution of this fund through one James Blackburn, who originally resided in the state of Virginia, and through his two daughters, Elizabeth Boatright and Rhoda Patterson. It is claimed that James Blackburn was one-half or more Cherokee Indian by blood. It is alleged that James Blackburn came from Virginia to Kentucky about the year eighteen hundred and that he brought his family with him. After living in Kentucky a few years, he died. He was not enrolled in 1835 and probably was not alive as late as that, and of course was not enrolled in 1851, nor do any of his descendants appear to have been enrolled either in 1835 or 1851. Neither he nor is children were living within the Cherokee domain in 1835 or 1851. In fact, it does not appear that he ever lived within the Cherokee domain. On the contrary, his children and their children always lived with the white people and never had anything whatever to do with the Eastern Cherokee tribe of which they were probably never members. These persons seem to have no shadow of a claim as none of their ancestors were ever enrolled, or were parties to the treaties of 1835-6 or 1846. It does not appear that any ancestor ever lived within the Cherokee domain, and these applicants show no connection whatsoever with the Eastern Cherokee. Some members of this family applied for enrollment by the Dawes Commission and were rejected. For the reasons above, the applications of these parties are rejected.

In October, 1997, in a letter to her grandson, David Cary Rains, Verna Boatright Milstead writes, "My grandfather, Francis Alexander Boatright, was 13 years old when his parents.....left Kentucky in 1851, taking with them all of their children (12), who were all born in Kentucky, and moved to Missouri where they settled in Gentry County. A few years later, Francis Alexander and two of his brothers, Jesse Stinson and Joseph Marion, came to Arkansas and settled in Crawford County.

The Boatrights were pioneer families of Crawford County. Francis Alexander owned and farmed land in the Oak Grove vicinity. His specialty was growing and harvesting sweet potatoes- I wish I could remember the name of the potato. They were extremely large and a rich, red potato. He was referred to as the 'Sweet Potato King' of Crawford County. The farmers brought their produce into Van Buren on Saturday, parking their wagons at the head of Main Street next to the old Frisco depot. In the Van Buren Press-Argus centennial issue (Van Buren's only newspaper), there is a picture of the Saturday farmer's gathering and I am sure Grandpa's wagon was right there.

In about 1916, he sold the farm and moved to Wagoner, Oklahoma. to be near his youngest son. His health had been failing- he had a stroke and died on December 27, 1918.

When we first moved back to Fort Smith (in the early 1970's) your Grandad (James G. "Buck" Milstead) and I drove out to try and find the old farm, but, with so much pavement and new roads, it was a little difficult but, find it we did. We found the man who had bought the place. The old ranch house was gone, but the old red barn was still standing."

Francis Alexander served in the Army of the Confederacy. As near as can be determined from available records, he enlisted as a Private on June 27, 1862, and served for the duration of the war. He served the entire time in Companies "C" and "A" in what was variously known as McRae's Regiment, Glenn's Regiment, and Davie's Regiment.

This regiment was organized as the 28th Arkansas Infantry Regiment in July of 1862 under the command of Col. Dandridge McRae, and reorganized into the 36th Arkansas Infantry Regiment approximately in January of 1863. The regiment fought in the battles of Prairie Grove in December of 1862; Helena, Arkansas, in July of 1863; Little Rock, Arkansas, in September of 1863; The Red River Campaign in 1864; and Jenkin's Ferry in 1864. The regiment surrendered on May 26, 1865, and was disbanded.

The family was yet another example of the divisiveness and long lingering bitterness that resulted from the War for Southern Independence. Three of Francis Alexander's brothers served in the war. Joseph Marion enlisted in the 10th Arkansas Infantry, C.S.A., and was killed in service. William Taylor and Jacob Gates enlisted in the Union Army in Missouri. Both survived the war.

William Turner Harwood's date of birth is uncertain. His obituary indicates that he was 70 years of age when he died in 1897. This would make his date of birth 1826-1827. According to a cemetery survey by Peggy Rogers, his tombstone gives no date of birth and reads, "Died February 14, 1897; Age 72 years." If this is correct, his date of birth would be 1825-1826.

OBITUARY

William Turner HARWOOD - Fort Smith Elevator. (died Feb 14 1897]

"Mr. William T. Harwood, father of our townsman, Mr. J. B. Harwood, died at his home near Huntsville, Madison County, Arkansas, on the 15th ult., aged seventy years. His funeral took place on the 16th and was largely attended.

Mr. Harwood was a native of Virginia. At a very early age he went to

Tennessee with his parents, where he lived until the breaking out of the

Civil war, when he settled in Madison County, where he lived until the day

of his death.

In Madison County Mr. Harwood was recognized as a live, progressive,

up-to-date farmer, and through his admiration for fine stock the wealth of

Madison County was largely increased. He introduced into Madison County

some of the finest breeds of stock, and some of his horses sold for large figures.

Mr. Harwood was a veteran of the Mexican war. He enlisted at the first call

for volunteers and served until the war closed. He took service in a

Tennessee regiment and was assigned to cavalry service, in which he did

some very active work. He served under both Generals Scott and Taylor

and took part in the battles of Vera Cruz, Chepultepec, Cherubusco, Buena

Vista, Monterey and Cerro Gordo. He also participated in a number of other

engagements which are not recorded in history.

Madison County papers speak in the highest terms of Mr. Harwood."

After the death of her husband, James A. Boatright, in Oklahoma in 1910, Lizzie remained in Oklahoma until 1918. She then moved to Colorado and eventually acquired 520 acres of land which she farmed and ranched with hired help.

She married J.V.N. Polk in 1923. She survived her second husband and her son, Fred Boatright, to live to the age of 103. She died in 1965 in Trinidad, Colorado.

Notes for JAMES ALBERT BOATRIGHT:

James A. Boatright was a blacksmith by trade. In the Spring of 1893, after marrying Lizzie Scaff, they moved to Oklahoma and homesteaded 160 acres of land. Three children, one son and two daughters were born to them during this time.

Leaving Oklahoma, the family moved to the Center Point, Texas, area for three years. While there, they became involved with a group of other people who formed a colony and moved to Tampico, Mexico, to grow oranges. Unfortunately, they never could obtain clear title to the land and moved back to Oklahoma, near Arapaho, a year later.

James died in Oklahoma in 1910. One story, unconfirmed, is that he was killed while trying to escape from a burning building.

In October, 1997, in a letter to her grandson, David Cary Rains, Verna Rowena Boatright Milstead writes, "Franklin Bowden Boatright, the second son of Francis Alexander Boatright and Elizabeth Ann Frances Dannells (sometimes spelled Daniels) married Alta Crawford........March 10, 1895, in Crawford County, (Van Buren), Arkansas. The first three years of their married life were spent on a farm near Oak Grove, east of Van Buren. They left the farm and moved to Van Buren where, in 1901, he was employed by the Iron Mountain Railway Co., first as a fireman, then as a locomotive engineer. (The Iron Mountain later became the Missouri Pacific) He worked for the Missouri Pacific until 1930 when he retired on disability as a result of a stroke. He died on October 25, 1935, at the age of 61.

Before my father's stroke, he was very interested and active in the Masonic order and was a member of the Van Buren Blue Lodge No. 6, Western Arkansas Consistory(Scottish Rite), DeMolay, and the Royal Arch. I think it is interesting that my grandfather (Francis Alexander Boatright), my father (Franklin Bowden Boatright), my husband (James Gilispie Milstead), and my son-in-law (David Cleveland Rains) were all members of the Van Buren Masonic Lodge. My grandfather's membership certificate is dated 1877. I have the original certificate and a copy is in my history album.

Personally, my father was a very kind, soft-spoken, mild mannered man. He had no hobbies--lived a very simple life--devoted to his family."

J.E. Boatright. One of the oldest homesteads in Nodaway Township of Andrew County is the Boatright farm, in section 36, which has been under cultivation and improvement for more than half a century, and its present proprietor, J.E. Boatright, was born there more than half a century ago. He is a farmer and stock raiser, a thorough business man, and among other good things that come into his life is the head of a happy home and the father of a large family of children.

J.E. Boatright was born on his present farm September 10, 1863, a son of Joseph and Sarah (Davidson) Boatright. His father, who was a native of Gentry County, Missouri, enlisted in the Confederate army at the beginning of the war and was killed in service. This son is the only child. The mother was born in Tennessee, was brought to Andrew County by her parents when

she was a child, and lived on the old farm until her death in December, 1900, at the age of sixty-three.

J.E.Boatright grew up on the homestead farm, gained his education in the country schools, and has been a practical farmer and manager of the resources of the soil since boyhood. His farm comprises 150 acres of good land in Nodaway Township, and in 1911 he improved it with a handsome modern home of ten rooms. He also rents another farm, and the chief feature of

his business is the raising of cattle and hogs.

Politically Mr.. Boatright is a democrat and is a member of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church. His fraternal affiliations are with the Modern Brotherhood of America and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. On October 24, 1890, he Married Eunice Jane Deming. Mrs.. Boatright was born in Andrew County October 21, 1871, a daughter of William W. And Isyphenia (Files) Deming, her father was a native of Vermont and her mother of Andrew County. Her parents were married in 1870, and the

father died in March, 1894, while the mother is still living in this county. The children of Mr.. and Mrs.. Boatright are: Ernest, who died at the age of one year; Elmer a farmer in Nodaway Township; Glenna; Floyd; Marie; Harold; Arthur; Mildred, who died at the age of three months; Margaret; and Marjorie, who died when one year of age.

According to Robert Guy Boatright, Rodney was the only child of John Waller Boatwright who did not drop the "W" from his last name.

Gerald M. Boatwright, a grandson, writes that Rodney left Paint Lick, Madison County, Kentucky, on October 30, 1882. He arrived in Lawson, Ray County, Missouri, on November 21, 1882. On December 11, 1883, he left Missouri and settled on a farm 5.5 miles northeast of Lone Elm, Kansas.

He married a widow, Arvilla Babcock Croft in 1888. In 1910 he was hired as a solicitor for Bell Telephone and in 1913 was appointed manager of Bronson Telephone Company and moved his family to Bronson, Kansas. In 1914, they moved to Iola, Kansas.

William Volney Boatright was born near Alma, Arkansas, and was the son of William Newton Boatright and Eugenia Garner, the second child in a family of ten children.

William finished the Van Buren schools in 1895 and enrolled in the Arkansas Industrial University in Fayetteville. After 3 1/2 years, he had to drop out for lack of money. He held several low paying jobs in the area until 1902 when he was appointed Chief Deputy of the Crawford County Sheriff's Office by Sheriff Jim Pitcock. He also served in this capacity under Sheriff Bill Garrett.

In 1904 his father died, leaving the mother with six minor children. "This sad bereavement placed the family responsibility on me, " he recalled, and he began to look for increased income.

In 1906 he was elected County Clerk and served two terms. Upon the completion of his second term, he established a general real estate business in Van Buren and was quite successful. He was one of the organizers of the Van Buren Trust Company in 1911 and served as director until 1913 when the company was consolidated with Citizen's Bank, where he also served as a director. In 1919 he was elected vice-president and remained in this position until 1934 when he was appointed District Supervisor of the Home Owner's Loan Corporation. He was also associated with several other mortgage-lending institutions beginning in 1939.

In 1940 he moved his family across the river to Fort Smith.

In the early years of his marriage, William was a member of the First Baptist Church in Van Buren while his wife attended the Wood Memorial Christian Church. William eventually joined the Christian Church and after the move to Fort Smith, he and his wife joined the First Christian Church in that city. William served at various times as Deacon, Trustee, Elder, and Elder Emeritus.

Percy received his early schooling at the old Broadway School in Van Buren, Arkansas. He was unable to finish high school because of the death of his mother in 1907. He went to work for the Hunt and Ayres Furniture Store in Van Buren and in 1916 opened his own store. He ran this business for 17 years.

In 1935 he moved his furniture business to Fort Smith, but five years later sold out to the Arcade Furniture store. He worked for them until 1955 when he retired from the furniture business.

Upon his retirement, he went to work for the Van Buren Chamber of Commerce and served there for 17 years without pay, retiring in 1972.

Percy was a very active Baptist, a 32nd Degree Mason, and the only charter member of the Van Buren Rotary Club.

Notes for JAMES GILISPIE "BUCK" MILSTEAD:

James G. Milstead was the youngest of nine children. His date of birth was August 16, 1898. The only record of the event was the family bible which was destroyed in a house fire. When he served in the Army during World War II, his mother had to sign an affidavit attesting to his date of birth as there was no other documentation in existence. As he would have been one year too old to serve, his mother, at his request, attested that his year of birth was 1899. As a result, the year of birth as shown in his Army records is incorrect.

His given name was "Gilispie". He added the "J." himself at a young age and used the initials "J.G.". It is not exactly clear how, due to differing family memories, but the "J" evolved into James. Eventually, his nickname of "Buck" took precedence and that is what he was most often called by family and friends, though his wife called him "Jim" or "Jimmy". Occasionally, one of his older siblings could be heard calling him Gilispie, but that became rare as time went on.

He went to work for the Missouri Pacific Railroad on July 8, 1918, and worked for the railroad until he retired on August 16, 1964. At the outbreak of World War II he was General Mechanical Foreman at the Coffeyville, Kansas, yard. He was granted leave on August 6, 1943, to enter the Army Transportation Corps where he was commissioned a Captain in the Rail Division and was assigned as a Railway Master Mechanic, Fourth Transportation Zone, HQ, Atlanta, Georgia. The Fourth Zone included Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. He was responsible for the maintenance and repair of all rolling stock at installations within the zone. He was also responsible for 1054 government owned railway cars and 61 hospital cars. He was also personally responsible for the construction of a modern rail, heavy repair shop at Fort Benning, Georgia.

An article in the Atlanta Constitution during the war read as follows:

"Starting on September, 1944, with an old airplane hanger that was filled with obsolete machinery, Major James G. Milstead, Fourth Zone Master Mechanic, who in civilian life had served 29 years with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, has built this former shed into a modern railroad repair shop.

In doing this, Major Milstead has saved the government thousands of dollars. He took some discarded rails that had once been used on Fort Benning's 60 centimeter railroad and used them for beams in building two new units for the shops. In making these new buildings he only used salvaged material. The only expense was $245 for glass.

Major Milstead has also installed a brass foundry in the shop. Brass bushings and fittings have been very scarce. The major salvaged enough brass around the camp to almost supply the foundry."

He received a promotion to Major on August 31, 1945, and was later separated from service in April of 1946. He was sent to Dupo, Illinois, by the Missouri Pacific and re-assigned to his position as General Mechanical Foreman until November 30, 1946, when he was recalled into the Army as an instructor in the Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis, Virginia. On May 1, 1947, he was discharged and sent to St. Louis, Missouri, by the railroad. A year later he was transferred to Alexandria, Louisiana, his home state, and worked there as General Mechanical Foreman until his retirement in 1964.

His grandson, David Cary Rains, was going to college across the river from Alexandria in Pineville from 1963-1967, and both during this time period and later, when he was a state policeman in the same area, had occasion to speak to numerous railroad men who had worked with and for his grandfather. All of these men, without exception, spoke extremely highly of "Buck" Milstead. Many described him in almost exactly the same words by saying, "He is the finest man I've ever worked with."
