Talitha Stories

Taliftha and her children 1920.

Children of JOSEPH MASTERS and TALITHA SPEAR are:

      16. M.  i.  AMBROSE ORESTES9 MASTERS, b. April 20, 1870, Dalzell, Liberty Twp. Washington Co., OH; d. November 10, 1941, Marietta, Washington Co., OH.

      17.  M. ii. JAMES S. MASTERS, b. 1876, OH; d. July 11, 1943, OH.

      18.   F.  iii. SARAH E. MASTERS, b. August 01, 1877, Liberty Twp., Washington Co., OH.

        Notes for SARAH E. MASTERS:
A birth record dated August 1, 1877 shows the birth of Sarah E. E. J. Masters. Note: Thelma Ritchie Masters, wife of John Wayne Masters, told me (bjmk) that my grandfather, Ambrose Masters, had a sister named Sarah Elizabeth Louisa Jane. It is possible that the Recorder misunderstood Louisa as Eliza and initialed Sarah E.'E'.J. The family would not necessarily know of such an error. As she grew, apparently, Sarah decided to use the name of 'Louisa'. No record has been located for the birth of a child named Louisa, yet this person exists and is, in fact, listed as such at the time she wed Henry 'Ike' Rumbold. See the family picture under the mother's name, Talitha. Other family pictures show Louisa but there is none of Sarah.
RWM search finds Louisa 'A'. Masters 21 years of age on Aug. 2, 1898, one day later than birth recorded for SEEJM.
Sarah is shown as Sarah E. age 2, in the 1880 census. However, no record found for Sarah after this date. No death of record has been found. Perhaps her name was changed to Louisa. I have entered Louisa Masters based on her marriage record in the court house and the fact that the family knew and acknowledged her existence. See notes under Louisa's name. This does not, however, explain who the eighth child Talitha claims as number of children born. Unless, of course, this was actually a second set of twins, one dying shortly after birth and both names recorded for the surviving child?

      18.   F.  iv.  LOUISA MASTERS, b. August 02, 1877, OH; d. June 04, 1933. (This Louisa is a niece of the Louisa Masters who m. Nathan Pryor.)

        Notes for WILFORD H. MASTERS:
Wilford, at the age of 19 in 1900 census taken in Dunham twp. on June 15, 1900, was found in home with his mother and her second husband. He was the only child from her previous marriage in the home at that time. This census indicates Wilford's mother Lydia had had 9 children with 7 living. It would appear that two of the children from her previous marriage to James Anderson Masters were deceased.
Also, June 12, 1900 Muskingum Twp., the 1900 census shows a Wilphred Masters, boarder at the residence of Elmer and Clara Devol and their children Frances and Lloid.
RWM notes: Castlering should be Kesselring, Wilphred should be Wilford and Lloid should be Lloyd.

      25.   F.   iii.  MAGGIE MASTERS, b. October 11, 1883, (Fearing Twp.,) Washington Co., OH.

      26.   M.   iv.   JOSEPH J. MASTERS, b. 1885, Washington Co., OH.

Benjamin married LUCINDA JANE HUPP December 04, 1881. She was born Abt. 1864 in Dalzell, Liberty Twp., Washington Co., OH.

        Notes for BENJAMIN LAWSON MASTERS:
Item in The Marietta Leader, Sat., August 22, 1891: Struck by Lightning - A sad accident occurred in Wood County, W.Va. near Big Run on Tuesday afternoon last. Three sons of Mr. B. L. Masters, who lives a few miles below Williamstown were crossing an open field during a thunder-storm and were making for cover as rapidly as possible. The boys were aged respectively nine, eight and six years; the oldest boy had the youngest brother by the hand leading him, and running rapidly to avoid the storm. As they ran a bolt of lightning felled the oldest and youngest boys to the ground, killing the former instantly and only stunning the little boy to no serious degree. The oldest boy was struck in the head and life was extinct from his shattered body ere he was aware.

I do not put anyone on line who was born after 1900.
