Second Generation

    5. Samuel PACKARD (George) was christened on 17 Sep 1612 in Stonham, Aspal, England. He died on 7 Apr 1684 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Mass..

"The status of a yeoman farmer in these times was relatively good if he were successful, and there was enough social mobility that he could actually aspire to the status of the gentry for some of his children. Samuel was the third son. however, and in a land where promogeniture was the practice, he could expect little in the way of inheritance" (Packard, Karle S., "Samuel Packard and the English Origins of the Packard Family", an excerpt from a Packard's Progress editon).

Samuel Packard with his wife, Elizabeth, and a daughter left Ipswich on the Ship Diligent on June 1638. They arrived in Boston Harbor on August 10, 1638. They immediately went to Hingham. They were in Hingham in 1652, when his daughter Deliverance was baptised. The family then moved to Weymouth where Samuel was a Selectman from 1654 to 1664 and some of his children were born in Weymouth. Then they settled in Bridgewater, Massachsuetts about 1664 where he was appointed Constable. Samuel purchased land in Bridgewater before August 1662. He was Collector of Minister's Rates in 1670, Surveyor of Highways in 1672, and Constable again in 1674. In 1671 Samuel was licensed to keep an ordinary (tavern) which he had in 1670. Since Samuel signed with a mark, this suggests that he could not write. This may be why some early records show the name as Packer.

The History of Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Mass. showed a Josiah Packard son of Paul and Sarah Bruce. I might point out here that I have no documental proof that the Josiah Packard s/o Paul was the Josiah of Vt. and my third grandfather, though circumstantial evidence supports very strongly that he was. Mrs. Dorthy DeWitt Wilkinson a descendant of Charlotte Packard wrote in a letter that Charlotte claimed she was descended from t he Royal Bruce line of Scotland. The Bruce name has been carried down in the family.
I followed the census records, 1800 still Vt. 1810 Onondago Co., N.Y. 1820 Lansing, Tompkins Co., N.Y. Then the 1830 census Marion Co., Ohio, by then Josiah was gone and his wife Eunice could have been the aged female living with Charlotte and her husband. By 1840 census the family had spread out to different counties of Missouri. Josiah Bruce Packard and his family to Appanoose Co., Iowa, 1843 some of the later generations moved from Mo., to Calif. Clementine, James, Justin, Eurydica and Alanson MacKenzie, children of Josiah Bruce rermoved from Iowa to Oregon. History of Marion Co. Ohio says Josiah his sons and sons-in-laws came early to the county (by1822) That Josiah was an old Baptist Minister and Rev. War soldier. Family tradition says that Clementine said her father lost an arm in the Rev.War, she was correct in part her father lost an arm in the War of 1812-17 Sept 1814 at battle of Fort Erie, Canada. I checked the application for pensions Rev. War on Microfilm at LDS Library SLC Josiah Sr. had not applied. If wounded and totally disabled he would have qualified for an invlid pension. He was dead by the time Congress past an act granting pensions to Rev. War Soldiers for service. This act granted pensions only to those Veterans who were in poverty. After reading the film for Packards I was surprised to find so many Packards destitute. There are only records for two Josiah Parkards at the National Archives one from Maine and one from Mass. I will send later photocopies of the National Archives - Josiah P ackard, PVT, Rev. War. Cushings Regiment, Mass. Militia on Pay Roll. of Capt. Abijah Lamb;s Company in Col Cushings Regement of Militia from the State of Massachusetts Bay, including the time of return home.
    Roll not dated.
Date of engagement 15 Aug. 1777.
Date of dischage 20 Nov 1777.
    Distance from home 180 miles.
Time of seervice 3 months 22 days.
For DAR proof would be needed that this is the same Josiah Packard that lived in Marlboro, Vt.

(see Joseph Peckhard) (Will send photocopy later.
The only information to tie the above Josiah to the Josiah of Vt. would be the Marion Co., Ohio History. As the Town records of Marlboro, Vt. prove that Josiah of Vt. was the same as the old Rev. Soldier in Marion Co., Ohio. The Ohio History also says Josiah Packard was the first death in Tully Twp., Marion Co., Ohio. I figure he died abt. 1824. Josiah Sr. was a man of means. History of Marlborough Vt. (Newton) p 109. Freeman of Marlborough Vt. taking oath 4 Sept 1792 Josiah Packard. This would mean that on this date Josiah would have a new suit of clothes and 100 pounds. At least net worth. Josiah dealt in land while living in Vt. buing Tax Property at Sheriffs sales and re-selling in smaller parcels. Also bought and sold land in Marcellus twp. Onondago Co., N,Y. His children seem to have had a good education for the times. Charlotte according to Mrs. Wilkinson above said she attended an acadamy. The sons of Josiah Sr. were active in realestate moving to new areas helping form new countiess, and taking up Government land. I an also wondering if Josiah Sr. had 2 wives as he was 40 years old when his first child by Eunice was born. When the family moved to Tompkins Co., N.Y. they were other Packards living there strangers yet to me. From Your letter I conclude that you have been in touch with Dorothey DeWitt Wilkinson, 2519 n.w. 66 St. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I contacted her in Feb. 1974 I received an 8 page letter dated 11 March 1974. Said she had worked for 30 years on Old Thomas Wilkinson, his son Solomon Scribner W.& Wsife Charlotte. She said she was leaving for D.A.R. Congress and would also spend a week each in R.I. & Pa. and when she returned home would send me all of Charlotte's descendants and Packard Tombstone data. She ended her letter with, "Don't mark me off, I an interested." I wrote to her ttwice sending new information and never had an answer. I see Mrs. Wilkinson, in her letter has Jason G. (Gleason) Wilkinson s/o Solomon S. & Charlote b. knox Co. , Ohio. I do not understand what she meant but she wrote thus, John Parsons b. Knox Co., Ohio Jason G. m. 1799 May 23 MARY born.
I have found nothing more on Mary. She could have died young, or married. There seems to be a Manley connection somewhere. Maybe Mary married a Manley. Josiah Jr. named a son John Manley and my gr. grandmother Clementine did likewise. The Immegrant ancestor was Samuel Packard son of George packard & Mary Wither. Samuel Bapt. 17 Sept 1612, Parish of Stonham Aspal, Suffolk Co., England. From Chaffinn's notes on Easton; ldest Cemetery, Mrs. Sarah died 12 May 1765 aged 56 years. Here again we have a marriage at age 40. Was Sarah Bruce a Widow? Was Bruce her maiden name? According to her granddaughter Charlotte her maiden name was Bruce. Paul's 1st wife was born 1 July 1715.

I checked the map for Missouri and notice that you live about 9 miles west of Bethany, Mo. Have you copied any of the Wilkinson Thombstones? This has been a Packard year for me. Early in the year I contacted a lady in Centerville, Iowa who agreed to search courthouse records concerning Packards. In a Iowa Appanoose Co., History, reference is made that two minors were placed under guardianship of Williaam B. Packard. This turned up in the deed records where two sons of Josiah Bruce Packard deceased, petitioned the court to have their older brother appointed there guardiana for the purpose of filing in their behalf, Claim to Bounty Land due their father for service in the War of 1812. The act granting Bounty Land to Military Veterans was passed by Congress in Sept. 1850. In their claim for the Bounty Warrant they gave the company and officer their father served under. It was this information that I used to get from the National Archives the Military Pension and Bounty Land Records. 23 pages. Oh yes, they receive 80 acres near Centerville.
This information I received from Kathryn Rodgers of Bethany, Mo. unknown date. She gave me a great deal of data on both the Packards and Wilkinsons... She has passed now, some years ago.
