2 February 1687 Andrew Speare entered a cattle mark.

Other than the name of his property, nothing about Andrew suggests Ireland to me. It was just too early for the Scots-Irish. I'll give Virgil maybe Scot... or maybe even Irish, but not Scots-Irish from Northern Ireland. He may very well be Dutch and have come down from New Amsterdam. And even though I have that he may have been born in England, I don't think that an Englishman would live on property named Donegal for more than a minute.MAM

Note: The 1810 Cumberland Co, KY census shows a John Speer to be over 45 years old. I believe that this is our John Speer living near many other Speers. That means that he was born before 1765. The 1830 census Shelby Co, TN, Roll M19-181, Page 15, shows a J. Spears. He and his wife are both 60 to 70 years old. This puts his birth between 1760 and 1770. Combining both bits of information with the fact that John and Elizabeth wed in 1784, and that they needed their father's permission I put John's birth at 1763-65.
