DAVID STRAHAN

First Generation

IF you have been to my Strahan page before you'll see a BIG difference. This is my theory that makes all the records work. Alexander b. 1811 was John's son. John died early and David raised him as his own. I think that Joseph and Alexander were close in age and true brothers all through life. The other loose ends, I'm hoping we'll find a place for them too. They are William Owen Bell, I don't know what to think about him. He may have been one of David's grandchildren? William Strahan b. 1815, Andrew Jackson Strahan b. 1820 and Robert Strahan may have been John's sons as well. I think we need to find John's death records, and I think we'll find them in Kentucky. I hope everyone will join me in this theory by helping to prove it.

Alexander Strahan' s Obituary ( copy from newspaper). Alexander Strahan died at his residence on Upper Verde, August 26, 1894, age 83. He was born on Green River, Kentucky, August 26, 1811. He died on his 83rd birthday. At the age of 12 his family moved to Illinois. He lived there 27 years, and married Melinda Slegal. In 1851 they moved to Texas. where they lived until the great rebellion (Civil War). After the war he moved to Kansas for a short time, and Arkansas for a short time, then to the Verde Valley in Arizona. He was always known as a Frontiersman, probably taking this kind of spirit from his father, who was a revolutionary soldier, serving one year in that gallant little band fighting for the liberty of his country. He was always a model man, beloved and respected by all that knew him; he had no enemies, he had many friends. We all, wife, children, friends, join in saying that under all circumstances he was a kind and indulgent husband, father and neighbor. He and his wife had known each other since childhood. He is several years her senior. and he had trotted her on his knee when she was a child. They had been married a little over 51 years, and maybe the oldest married couple in the county. It seems he was forewarned of his death. The day before he died he called Malinda and said, "Mother, come and sit down by me. I want to talk to you". He then told her that he was going to leave her, and that she must take good care of herself and live easy. He said he left her so that she can well afford to do so. In the family and community he was like a landmark in the midst of a desert. His advice was good. He and Grandma raised a large family to mourn his loss. The attendance at his funeral was one of the largest seen on the Verde. Beaver Creek, Oak Creek, Lower Verde, Upper Verde, and Jerome were represented. They said, "We will miss him". Grandpa Strahan has left us, but memory of him remains and pleasant hours spent in his company. Grandma, remember that all join in your bereavement, and may Heaven's richest blessings be yours through the rest of lifes journey. To the children, "Go through life and do as he has done". Written by Alexander Strahan's children and grandchildren. Copied from Verde Valley Paper 2001. Mattie May Brashears.
