Gordon Richard AbbottGordon Richard Abbott, born 07 July 1908 in Mt. Vernon, New York was the second of three children born to Bertha (Underhill) Abbott (1872-1917) and Martin Dominick Abbott (1878-1930).1, 2 In the 1910 U.S. Census, we find Gordon living with his parents and his older brother, Albert Abbott, in Mt. Vernon, New York. His father was working as an electrician doing housewiring.3 Gordon's mother Bertha died in 1917 from the effects of tuberculosis when he was only about nine years old. It would appear that the family did not stay together for very long after Bertha's death. In the 1920 U.S. Census we find Gordon Abbott and Albert Abbott boarding with Peter and Mary Witzel in the "Lake District" of Harrison Township, Westchester County, New York.4 Their sister Grace May Abbott was living with her step-brother John Eisler in Port Chester, New York.5 It is not clear where their father was living during this period of time since he has not been located in the 1920 census. By 1930 Gordon Abbott had moved to the midwest and was working as an inspector-tester in an electrical factory. At the time the census was taken he was still single, living in a hotel located at 1043 North Pennsylvania Street in Indianapolis, Indiana.6 Gordon Abbott married Margaret Ardena Hollon, who was born on 23 April 1914 in Indianapolis, Indiana and died in St. Petersburg, Florida on 03 October 2006.7, 8 There were four children from this marriage: 9
