John Hawkins Lee Lowery

John Hawkins Lee Lowery

Very little is known about John Hawkins Lee Lowery. For example, what is the derivation of his two middle names -- Hawkins and Lee? In many of our families, such as Acker, Delaney and Lowery, there was a strong tradition over a long period of time of including historical family names - given and surname - when children were born and named. Could we have allied family members with Hawkins or Lee surnames?

According to the family Bible, John Hawkins Lee Lowery was born on July 11, 1865, in New York, NY. He was the last of four children from the marriage of William Benjamin Lowery and Emily Jane (Martin) (Curran) Lowery.1

John Lowery died at the age of 3 years, 10 months and 25 days, on June 6, 1869 in New York, NY.2 Because he was born after the 1860 U.S. Census and died before the enumeration in 1870, there are very few records from which we can gather information about John. The gravestone that he shares with a half-brother, Abner Baldwin Curran, has an inscription that would seem to indicate that he was called "Johnnie."

The inscripton reads as follows:

Our Little Johnnie
Aged 4 Years

He is interred in the Lowery family plot at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. 3
