Ella Schreiber's Story

Ella Schreiber

Ella Schreiber was the fourth of seven children born to my great-grandparents Edward Schreiber and Barbara (Wiegand) Schreiber. While her birth certificate is in the name of Elizabeth Schreiber, the other information on the certificate appears to substantiate that it is the document pertaining to Ella Schreiber.1 The certificate gives Ella Schreiber's birth date as April 7, 1886. Acording to the 1900 U.S. Census, Ella was born in New York City in April of 1886.2

In 1900, at age 14, she was a bookbinder living with other members of her family at 322 East 39th Street in Manhattan. The family consisted of Edward and Barbara Schreiber, and three of Ella's siblings: Lena Schreiber, age 15; Antoinette Schreiber (my grandmother), age 10; and Charles Schreiber, age 7.

Five years later when the 1905 New York Census was taken, the Schreiber family -- consisting of Edward Schreiber and three of his children, Ella, Antoinette and Charles -- was living at 337 East 43rd Street in New York City.3 Ella, now supposedly age 17 according to this census, has an occupation listed as "electric."4

By 1920, which is the next time we find a record of Ella Schreiber, she is married to Herbert R. Quimby.5 Ella and Herbert Quimby were residing with Ella's sister Lena, who by that time was married to William Henry Ziesse. The Ziesse and Quimby families were living at 687 East 132nd Street in the Bronx, New York, directly next door to Ella's and Lena's sister Antoinette (Schreiber) Abbott, Antoinette's husband Jameson Abbott, and the Abbott family children. The Abbott family was residing at 689 East 132nd Street, Bronx, NY.6 It is not known at this time when Ella and Bert were married, but it must have taken place after the 1905 New York State Census was taken because Ella was enumerated with the Schreiber family and was still single. The 1920 census indicates that the couple did not have any children.

Ella was Dorothy Eleanor Abbott's godmother.7

Ella (Schreiber) Quimby died quite young, from meningitus, on May 7, 1921, in Lincoln Hospital, Bronx, New York.8 Burial, which was handled by the W.F. Coester firm, took place on May 11, 1921, at St. Michael's Cemetery, East Elmhurst, New York.9

Also interred at St. Michael's Cemetery are Ella's sister Lena (Schreiber) Ziesse and Lena's husband William Henry Ziesse, her brother Charles Schreiber, and one of her husband's brothers, Frederick Ziesse.

1 Birth certificate for Elizabeth Schreiber - Birth Return, County of New York, City of New York, Certificate number 455236. Date of return: April 12, 1886. While it is possible that Ella was named Elizabeth at birth, there is no other record that I am aware of listing her by that name. One possible explanation for the discrepancy, if in fact there is one, is that the person filing the birth return (perhaps the medical attendant) made a mistake when the document was completed. Support for this birth return being that of Ella Schreiber is strong. The mother's name is Barbara Schreiber and her age (23) and place of birth correspond closely with the estimated year and place of her birth (about 1860 in Germany). Ella's father, Edward Schreiber is believed to have been born about 1849. The father on the certificate was age 37, which corresponds with Edward's age based on his estimated 1849 birth. An anomaly, however, is that the father is listed as Johan Schreiber. I have not been able to reconcile this discrepancy, but it is possible that Johan was part of Edward's full name. Finally, the place of birth (233 East 6th Street in Manhattan) was in the general vicinity that the Schreiber family was known to have been living during the 1880s. The April 7, 1886 date on this certificate corresponds with the month and year (April 1886) provided for Ella Schreiber in the 1900 United States Census.

4 Assuming that the month and year of birth (April 1886) in the 1900 U.S. Census are correct, Ella should have been 19 when the 1905 New York State Census taken in June. Instead, she is listed as having been 17 years of age.
