Frederick Ziesse - Death Certificate

Frederick Ziesse died on May 28, 1914, while residing as an inmate of the Rome State Custodial Asylum (RSCA) in Rome, Oneida County, New York. He died at approximately 30 years of age from pulmonary tuberculosis.1 Although today it would not be considered a credible cause of death nor would the disability be stated in such a way, the attending physician stated that a contributory "cause of death" was "congenital idiocy." According to the death certificate shown on this page, Frederick Ziesse had been a resident of the asylum for 14 years, 4 months and 25 days at the time of his death. The certficate does not state the date of burial, but we know from cemetery records that interment took place on June 1, 1914, at St. Michael's Cemtery in East Elmhurst, New York.2 Frederick is buried at St. Michael's along with his brother, William Henry Ziesse, sister-in-law Lena (Schreiber) Ziesse, Lena's brother Charles Schreiber, and Lena's sister Ella (Schreiber) Quimby. Frederick was the son of Henry and Margaret Ziesse.
