Records of the Batemans estate, Burwash

Batemans and adjoining land, Park House Watermill and part of Dudwell Farm, purchased by Rudyard Kipling on 28 Jul 1902 - ref. AMS5982/1
On 30 Mar 1803 a field at the W extremity of the estate on the turnpike road was sold to Thomas Francis Gorringe surgeon, who on 13 and 14 Mar 1810 purchased sixteen acres further E (including the land surrounding Edward Hilder's windmill) for £703 18s 9d. Gorringe moved to Brighton and on 29 and 30 Jun 1819 sold the land (with a newly-erected barn and lodges) to Robert Pattenden junior of Warbleton farmer and James Pattenden farmer (1/6-9), whom Robert Pattenden appointed his executors with Charles Geer tailor

These fields formed part of the Batemans estate which had been bought by Robert Pattenden yeoman in 1787. By his will of 9 Feb 1814 he appointed Robert Pattenden of Warbleton farmer, James Pattenden farmer and Charles Geer tailor his executors and trustees. He died in Jun 1821 and on 20 and 21 Feb 1822 the executors sold the fields (shown on the estate map of 1797 - see AMS5982/1/5 to John Sutton, formerly a common carrier and then a farmer and John Ellis shopkeeper his trustee for £365 10s 8d. Deeds of the whole estate were covenanted to be produced and copies provided and a term created by a mortgage, vested in Pennington Gorringe of Hellingly yeoman as surviving executor of his brother-in-law John Pattenden of Warbleton farmer (d 3 Feb 1815), allowed to merge with the inheritance (AMS5982/5/1-8). The property was mortgaged the following day to John Sawyer of Dallington grocer and draper for £300; also charged was a house in three dwellings on the N side of Burwash Town and E of a lane, occupied by John Sutton, Stephen Huggett and Noakes, which had been previously occupied by Charles Sandys before Richard Hicks and previously Elizabeth Weller and shared a well with a neighbouring house occupied by James Philcox junior late Edward Franks

On 21 and 22 Mar 1805 Lower Park Farm was sold by the Fishers to Benjamin Wood victualler and Charles Geer tailor his trustee for £312, £200 of which was raised by mortgage to Richard Sharpe of Lewes gent, who acknowledged repayment on 30 Sept 1815, prior to Wood's sale to Edmund Hilder miller and George Fagge Gilbert farmer his trustee for £400 on 21 and 22 Nov 1815 (AMS5982/6/13-21)
