Alma (Smith) Rust so states that her mother, Mary, line 6 was about a year old when her father John W. passed away.

Cause of death for Mary's father, John W. Smith: A friend of his wanted to scuffle (or play around) & Grampa didn't want to. The friend said "Aw, come on," & grabbed him and tossed him and he landed on his head, breaking his neck and dying 2-3 days afterwards. But not before admonishing his sons that the incident was accidental and not to be avenged.
