Robert Jason "Jace" Tucker

Jace Tucker, 94 Years, Father of 18, Dies

Robert Jason (Jace) Tucker of Cowan, father of 18 children, died Sunday at his home after a short illness. He was 94.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Burial was in Montgomery Cemetery.

Sixteen of the Tucker children are still living. All of them were born at home and were raised on the farm. The oldest is 71 and the youngest is 45.

Tucker married the former Martha Jane Partin, who survives, when he was 21 years old and she was 15. They had been married 72 years.

He rented a number of farms until buying his own on Greenhaw Road. He sold the farm at age 72 and retired to a house he bought on Myers Street in Cowan.

A son, Grizzard Tucker, of Tullahoma, recalled how his dad bought a haybaler and baled hay for other farmers to provide a livelihood for his large family. "He enjoyed life with his many children," he said.

A Coffee County native, he was born Nov. 23, 1884. He was the son of Samuel and Liza Tucker.

He was a Baptist.

Survivors besides his wife and son are seven daughters, Mrs. Maude Henderson, Winchester, Mrs. Daisy Bell Cornelius, Tullahoma, Mrs. Velma Haid and Mrs. Marie Crowe, both of Nashville, Mrs. Bertha Kuestorwski, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Stella Wilkerson, Cowan, and Mrs. Beulah Jean Newton, Rome, Ohio; eight other sons, Lon A., Decherd, marion, Tullahoma, Otis and Ellis, Cowan, Paul and Dewey, Mishawaka, Ind., and Hugh Lee and Homer Tucker, South Bend, Ind., two sisters, Mrs. Nell Willn, Detroit, and Mrs. Carrie Smith, Estill Springs; a brother, Elmer Tucker, Detroit; 63 grandchildren, 100 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
