Slovenia (Slovenija)

The Republic of Slovenia has been a part of many different countries throughout its history. As for my family, I was always told about Austria-Hungary.

Austria-Hungary is also known as the duel monarchy. It was a nation in central Europe which was ruled by the Habsburg monarchy from 1867 to 1918. It was established in 1867 under Francis JosephI, king of Hungary, and emperor of Austria.

The nation included present day Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and parts of Romania, Poland, Italy, Slovenia, The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Bosnia, Herzegovina and Croatia.

More about Slovenia

Slovenia is now a republic in southeastern Europe in the Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered by Austria (north), Croatia (south), Hungary (east), Italy and the Adriatic Sea (west). Slovenia became a part of Yugoslavia after the dual monarchy, but claimed its independence in June, 1991. The capital city of Slovenia is Ljubljana (Loo-BLA-na).

The western side of Slovenia is mountainous and heavily forested. The northeast is also forested. Other parts of the eastern side are on a limestone plateau. Mount Triglav is the highest point in the country, forming part of the Julian Alps in the northwest. Two national symbols of Slovenia are the chamois, which is an antelope-like animal, and the linden tree.

Slovene is a Slavic ethnic group, making up about 88% of the population. They are heavily influenced by German and Austrian cultures. The Slovenian language uses the Latin alphabet, and most Slovene's are Roman Catholic. Children there go to school between the ages of 7 and 15.
