RETIRED PENNSY CARPENTER DIES

Simon S. Mower d. 28 Jan 1924, a well known retired carpenter of the Altoona car shops department of the Pennsylvania railroad, died at 12:45 o'clock this morning at his home, 207 1/2 Tenth street, after a lingering illness of three years duration following a stroke of paralysis. Simon Smith Mower was born in Path Valley, Franklin county, Aug. 25, 1850, a son of Rev. Simon S. and Catherine (Piper) Mower, both deceased. He spent his early life in the vicinity of his birthplace. 

He learned the trade of carriage maker early in life and also devoted his time in the teaching of vocal music, being an instructor for eighteen years. He came to Altoona at the age of 36 years and entered the employ of the Pennsy on Nov. 1, 1886.

He served in the car shops department at Fourth street under Master Mechanic John Levan and was later transferred to the Thomas Ieader carpenter gang at Sixteenth street. When the Sixteenth department was discontinued he returned to No. 1 planing mill at Seventh street where he ended his duties by retirement on Sept. 1, 1919. His active service with the railroad covered a period of thirty-three years. 

Mr. Mower was married Dec. 24, 1874, to Louise M. Reidenbaugh at Chambersburg, Pa. To the union six children were born. The widow and the following children survive: Mrs. E. M. Heckert, Fred C., Leroy E., Chester and Louis R., all of Altoona. He is also survived by the following brothers, Reverends John R. Mower of Nebraska, Jeff Mower of North Dakota, David Mower of Texas, Harry H. Mower of Connecticut, Joseph R. Mower of Kearney, Neb., and Alfred B. Mower of Harrisburg, Pa., all of whom are ministers of the United Brethren faith. Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

Deceased was a member of the First United Brethren church in this city, of Lodge No. 54, Knights of the Golden Eagle, and Mountain Temple, No. 5, Ladies of Golden Eagle, and the Railroad Relief. 

Funeral services will be conducted from the First United Brethren church at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery. source: Altoona Mirror January 28, 1924

Mrs. Mary Louise Mower d. 1942- Widow of Simon S. Mower, died at 4:50 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of her son, Louis R. Mower, 909 Twenty-eighth street. She was born Aug. 21, 1856, at Chambersburg, a daughter of Louis and Magdalene Ridenbaugh, and was married Dec. 24, 1874. Surviving are these children: Mrs. Hattie Heckert, Fred S., Louis R., and Leroy E., all of the city. Two sons preceded her in death. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mower was the last of her immediate family. She was a lifelong member of the United Brethren church, of the Friendly Bible class, the Ladies of the Golden Eagle, and a charter member of the Winnehurket council, No. 69, Degree of Pocahontas, to which she belonged for thirty-seven years. Walter S. Mower b. 29 May 1878 d. 5 May 1903 - A young man employed by Milk Dealer E. A. Caum, died of tubercular meningitis at 4 o'clock this morning, at his home, 924 Second avenue. He was aged 24 years and was a native of Chambersburg. Besides his parents, S. S. and Mary L. Mower, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hattie Heckert, and four brothers, Fred S., Lester, Louis and Leroy E. all at home. Deceased was a member of the First United Brethren church. Fred S. Mower d. 1962 - Who resided with a niece, Mrs. Naomi McFarland, of 510 Fifth Ave., died at 4:50 p.m. yesterday in Valley View. He was born in Chambersburg on April 25, 1882, a son of Simon and Louisa (Reidenbaugh) Mower. Surviving are a brother, Leroy E. Sr., of the city and several nieces and nephews. He served in the Army from 1907 to 1914 and retired in 1944 as a motor car operator at the East Altoona hump, Middle Division, after 33 years of service. Mrs. Ethel S. Mower d. 1961 - Of 909 28th St., died at 3:05 p.m. yesterday in the Altoona Hospital, where she was admitted July 26, after an extended illness. She was born in Altoona, June 26, 1892, a daughter of George and Ida (Stevens) Carolus, and on May 9, 1912, in Baltimore, Md. married Louis R. Mower, who died June 28, 1952. Surviving are two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Nora Chase of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Agnes Mock and Clay T, of the city. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Euodia Bible Class, and the P.R.R. Retired Men's Auxiliary. Mrs. Hattie E. Hassler, wife of Rev. A. E. Hassler, of Indianapolis, died at Enhaut, Pa. November 20. She is a sister of Rev. Z. C. Mower, of Muncie, Indiana, who sends us the information. At the time of her death she was on a visit to a sister at whose home she passed away. A peculiar incident was that both father and mother died at the same home, each having gone on a visit to that place. The funeral occurred at Indianapolis, Monday November 25. Charles Lester Mower d. 1936 - Injuries suffered yesterday morning while working in the car shop planing mill resulted in the death of Charles Lester Mower, aged 51, of 418 Pennsylvania street, Eldorado, at the Altoona Hospital at 4:50 o'clock this morning.

He was struck in the abdomen by a piece of wooden material reported to have been thrown by a rapidly revolving saw. The plank inflicted a severe laceartion wound of the abdomen, the wound puncturing the intestines, and in addition he is believed to have suffered other internal injuries.

The accident occurred about 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning and immediately following admission to the hospital an emergency operation was performed in the operating room. The man's condition was regarded as serious from the time of his admission.

Mr. Mower had recently moved with his family from an apartment at Maple avenue and Twenty-ninth street to the Eldorado address. He was employed as a machine carpenter by the railroad company and had been in the service for a number of years. 

He was born in Chambersburg on April 6, 1885, a son of Simon and Louise Mower. 

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elsie Mower; one son, Charles, at home; his mother, three brothers and one sister. Fred S., Louis R., and Leroy E. Mower and Mrs. Hattie Heckert, all of the city.

Mr. Mower was a member of the First United Brethren church. The body may be viewed at the Gilden funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening. Leroy Edgar Mower d. Dec. 31, 1968 - Formerly of 1911 Union Ave., died at 12:30p.m. Tuesday in Alberts' Convalescent Home, where he was admitted Nov. 2, after an extended illness. He was born in Altoona on Aug. 22, 1892, a son of Simon S. and Mary Louise (Reidenbaugh) Mower. Surviving are four children, Mrs. Eileen E. Lauder of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Mrs. Shirley M. Detterbeck of Duncansville, Mrs. Joan M. Eckard of Painesville, Ohio, and Leroy Jr. of Woodbridge, Va. and three grandchildren. Mr. Mower was of the EUB faith. He was a veteran of World War I as a corporal in France and a member of James L. Noble Post 3, VFW. He retired in 1952 as a machinist helper at Juniata after 28 years of service for the PRR. Charles Albert Mower d. May 27, 1990 - Mr. Mower, 79, of 907 28th St. died at 2:10 p.m., Sunday, May 27, 1990, at Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness.

Known as Chick, Mr. Mower retired as a sales and service representative in 1976, after 45 years service. He was first employed by Underwood Corp. and then by Blair Office Supply.

He was born Sept. 1, 1910, in Altoona, the son of Charles Lester and Florence (Sansom) Mower, and was twice married: first in September 1931 in Altoona, to Elizabeth Dull, who died in August 1968, then on Oct. 19, 1974, in Altoona, to Jean Kozain Baumgartner.

Surviving are his wife, four step-children: Carl Baumgartner of Longmont, Colo; Donna Hite and Fred Baumgartner of Altoona; and Janet Everhart of Port Carbon; and seven step-grandchildren.

Mr. Mower was a member of Broad Avenue United Methodist Church. He served as thrice potent master of Mountain Lodge, F&AM; and was a member of Mountain Council R&SM, Mountain Royal Arch, Pennsylvania York Rite College, Shamokin; Jaffa Temple, Sons of Mecca; Mountain Commandry, Knights Templar; and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite.

Freinds will be received 7 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Warren H Replogle Funeral Home. Interment at Grandview Cemetery. source: Altoona Mirror

Lewis Reidenbaugh Mower d. June 28, 1952 - Of 909 Twenty-eighth street, died at 3:12 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Altoona Hospital where he was admitted last Tuesday. He was born in Altoona April 22, 1889, a son of Simon S. and Mary Louise (Reidenbaugh) Mower. Mr. Mower was a former gang foreman in the Pennsylvania railroad carpenter shop, retiring in July, 1950, after 47 years service. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ethel (Carolus) Mower; two brothers, Fred S. and Leroy E. Mower, both of Altoona and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Mower was a member of the First E. U. B. church, the I.O.O.F., of Mountain Lodge, F & A. M. , Williamsport consistory, Jaffa Shrine and the Yard association.
