Elmer Schubert made lasting
impressions
Students 'never forgot' Monfort
Heights man
When Elmer Schubert began teaching 76 years ago, he wasn't much older
than the children he taught.
He was 17 when he taught his first class in a one-room school in North
Bend.
"They couldn't pay him that first year because he wasn't old enough,"
said a daughter, Ethel Friedhoff of Monfort Heights.
Mr. Schubert, a teacher, principle and superintendent, died Monday at
Providence Hospital. The Monfort Heights resident was 93.
He began teaching at Monfort Heights Elementary School, now part of the
Northwest Local School District, in 1923. He was a teacher, principal
and superintendent before retiring in 1963.
Mr. Schubert coached boys and girls hardball, softball, basketball and
track, and "he would pick up the kids and take them home," his daughter
said.
Late in his life, although he hadn't taught in more than 25 years, Mr.
Schubert continued to meet with about 50 former students, many of whom
were in their 80's. On the second Tuesday of each month, they gathered
at 8 a.m. at Strickers Grove in Ross for breakfast.
Mr. Schubert always prepared a message or anecdote for the group.
Together, they would reminisce about their school days.
"He had such an impact on their lives, they never forgot him," his
daughter said.
Mr. Schubert was born in Miamitown. He received a degree in education
from the University of Cincinnati.
He was a member of Monfort Heights Methodist Church, Columbia Lodge No.
44 F&AM and Scottish Rite of Cincinnati Valley and Marian Chapter
No. 318 Order of Eastern Star. He was married to the late Katherine
Schubert.
He is also survived by his second wife, Bertha Wallace Schubert; two
other daughters, Jean Schlelein of Palm Bay, Fla., and Glenna Porter of
Burnside, Ky.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Neidhard-Minges funeral Home, 3155
Harrison Ave., Westwood. Burial will be at Miamitown Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the Elmer Schubert Library or Scholarship
Funds, c/o Monfort Heights Elementary School, 3661 West Fork Road,
Cincinnati 45247. |
