HISTORY OF THE NANCY ALLEN

FAMILY

Nancy’s grandfather, SAMUEL ALLEN was the first of the family to arrive in America. Tradition says, he came to Virginia as a British soldier, prior to the American Revolutionary War. Later, he deserted and fought for the Colonist.

Federal record of action in R.War, "SAMUEL ALLEN ENLISTED AUGUST l5, l780. RANK, PRIVATE LENGTH OF SERVICE l8 MONTHS.

HIS CAPTAIN, THOMAS BELLE, COLONEL BUFORD, later COLONEL CAMPLELL records, Soldier started at enlistment when he came to

Virginia in 1773 and tht he was in the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774 serving under

Colonel Lewis. Soldier was in the following Revolutionary battles: Guilford, Camden in North and South Carolina April 1781. He was there too when Colonist

Took Fort Augusta, and the Siege of 96 in N. C. Date of his pension application

Was Oct. 17,1820. His claim was allowed. His residence was Monroe Co. Virginia.

Age at date of application, 72 years."

SAMUEL ALLEN married ESTER WILLIAMS, IN ROCKBRIDGE CO., VIRGINIA and moved to INDIAN DRAFT (at intersection of War Ridge Rd. at

Wayside, turn right toward Greenville, second graveled road to left to top of the

Mtn is the family lands and cemetery). He was awarded a claim of land there, the claim document signed by James Monroe, Governor of Virginia. He brought the FIRST APPLE TREE to this section. It is said, some of these trees were standing as late as 1912.

ESTER WILLIAMS DIED Jan. 24, 1822 at 74 years. SAMUEL ALLEN DIED June 21, 1845 in his 99th. Year.
