136. George Leonard RAUP was born in 1760 in Williams Twp, Northampton Co., PA. He died in 1835 in Catawissa, Columbia Co, PA. PARENT: Records of St. John's Union Congregations of Catawissa,

NAME: George Leonard Raup, Jr. and his descendants generally spelled
the name RAUP while family members who remained in Northampton County
continued to spell the name RAUB. Other variations such as ROUP and
RAUPP were sometimes used. Concerning George Leonard Raup's given
name, it was common among Germans and German descendants to have both
a first and a middle name and to be known by the middle name. For
males, a first name of John or Johann was most common but others such
as George were used. George Leonard's grandson William referred to his
grandfather as George in a biographical article and he is also listed
as George Leonard on one of the Militia musters. No reference to his
father being a George Leonard has been found but Meiser lists him as
George Leonard possibly because the younger is frequently listed as
Junior.

BURIAL-PLACE: Probably Union Cemetery, Catawissa (No headstone by that
name was found by Robert Raup in September 1994 but most of that age
in cemetery were unreadable).

Served in Capt Anthony Lerch's Co 4th Battalion under Lt Col Philip
Boem in 1782. Migrated to Shamokin Township where he purchased 88
acres of land in 1799. Calle Shakespeare's Woods was located at the
northwest junction of the two roads forming what was once the center
of Elysburg. Along the Pocahontas Creek which crossed the property,
Leonard operated a tannery, In 1810, he sold his land and bought land
in Catawissa, Columbia Co. Buried in Union County Cemetery, Catawissa,
Columbia Co, PA
