John Brady

In 1828, John Brady bought 100 acres of land on Elkwater Run in Randolph County (Deed Book 10, page 3) and the next year he purchased 50 acres on Tygart River (Book 10, page 27).

While there is little doubt that John Brady, the progenitor of the West Virginia Bradys, is a descendent of Hugh and Hannah Brady, our research in Lycoming and Northumberland Counties in Pennsylvania in 1977 almost convinced us that it would be next to impossible to trace him to this source. Their  descendants are so numerous and have scattered to so many areas in the United States, and it seems almost every family had a "John." We do know from the 1850 census that he was born about 1773.

NOTE - In on-going research, it has been determined conclusively that our branch was not from the Hugh - Hannah lineage. (name withheld) has been extensively researching our Genealogical "roots" and will be revealing her findings in the future. That's all I can say right now. (Gag Order) :)   RmB 4-15-2003

We have searched the courthouses in every county in West Virginia that might yield information concerning John Brady, as well as Augusta, Rockingham and Highland in Virginia, and the two above named counties in Pennsylvania. The oldest records from some counties have been destroyed by fire, so we have been unable to confirm the farm in Brady Hollow or the one at Brady Gate (supposed to have been near a church by that name in the last location) by court house records. We have located the site of the log house in Pendelton County and have some pictures of that location. Also we have searched all cemeteries in these sections without finding his grave. The only clue we found was the grave of a Samuel Brady and his wife, Phoebe, in the Mingo Cemetery near Valley Head, W.Va. This could have been a son of John Brady by his first wife. His marker gives the information that he was born Jan. 27, 1803; and died Jan. 14, 1879.

2005 - Here are some other documented references that show a "John Brady & Anna Christina Michael". This should be the "unknown" first wife of John, preceding his marriage to his second wife, Susannah Ware. It should also be noted that Anna' middle name has been shown in records as "Christena". *10AUG2007-In doing recent updates, I have discovered that the above page no longer exists (it is archived on
Wayback Machine) on the Berk's County PA Genealogical website, so I researched John and Anna again. This time I found more compelling detailed evidence regarding the first and second marriages of John BRADY s/o of Samuel BREADY.

Phoebe was born June 14, 1803, and died April 24, 1877. Her stone also bore the inscription, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." There were several other field stone markers without any identification in this section of the cemetery, including the graves, seemingly in the Samuel Brady plot, next to Samuel's. His parents may have been buried there, or in some such graves in another cemetery.

John Brady and his second wife, Suzannah Ware [Married Mar. 12, 1808 by Robt. Maxwell  - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvbarbou/randmar.htm], are listed in the 1850 census as living with his son, William Sherman Brady, in Upshur County, W.Va. We have not been able to find them in the 1860 census, so it is very likely that both died during the period between the two censuses. They both may be buried in the old Laurel Fork Cemetery, with just field stones to mark their graves. We think this is probable since the son and his wife, with whom they lived, are buried there.

We have no confirmed record of John Brady's children by his first wife, but he and Suzannah were the parents of the following children:

(II)       Allen
Christian (Alkire)        (Editorial note - Correct name is "Christina")
            Ellen (Coburn)
Nancy, married Elias Simons in 1831
            Sarah, married Elias Butcher

(Additional Info on this couple at: http://www.alkire.org/gen/johnwva/d0001/f0000054.html)

Ruth, married John W. Abbott, 1842
William Sherman, Married Frances Jane Lemons, 1842
(Ruth and William had a double ceremony. See Next Page about William)

(Unverified John Brady genealogical information found at : http://www.alkire.org/gen/johnwva/d0003/f0000040.html#I2228) However, there is some discrepancy with their lineage from John to Hugh-Hannah. There are no verifiable documented sources listed. In ongoing research, it has been proven conclusively by (name withheld), a descendant of John Brady, that our branch did not originate from the Hugh-Hannah lineage. (name withheld) hopes to publish her findings in the near future. RmB)
