Joshua Brazzle, Jr. was born about 1842 in Greene Co, Indiana and died on February 15, 1931 in Fairbury, Jefferson Co., Nebraska.
Family lore was that Joshua was 104 years old at the time of his death and even the obituaries from the newspapers stated "He Claimed to be 104" and "Centenarian Dies." While I have been unable to find a birth certificate or birth record, all the census records do point to a birth date of about 1842. There is no headstone with Joshua's name on it in the Maplewood Cemetery in Barnes, Kansas, however, I had corresponded with the Treasurer of the Cemetery in January, 1978 and he states that "per old records I checked that Joshua Brazzle is buried in Lot 202, the same lot that Phoebe Gano is buried in." Records also show that J. & R. Brazzel bought lots 178 and 201 on November 11, 1887. The Certificate of Death (Nebraska Div. of Vital Statistics B-1913) states cause of death was Cerebral Hemorrhage.
He was married three times: first to Sarah Jane Gano and when she died, he married her sister, Rachel Gano; then in later life he married Rachel Fielder Singleton Dodson.
By all census records we can conclude that Joshua (Jr.) was born in Greene Co, Indiana. His parents, Joshua (Sr.)and Nancy Quillen Brazzle, moved to Harrison Co. Missouri in approximately 1855 when Joshua was stilll a child. Many other relatives and friends moved at the same time from Greene Co to Harrison Co., Mo. but the reason why so many moved is unclear. About the time of the Civil War, Joshua Jr. moved his family from Harrison County, Missouri to Washington Co, Kansas. The first record of land owned by Joshua Jr.was in Washington Co, Kansas.
Joshua Brazzle and Sarah Jane Gano
were married about 1859. Sarah Jane was born about 1841 in Ohio (per census records) and is the daughter of Robert Gano and Phoebe Newland.

Mary Ann Brazzle- born February 26, 1864 in Harrison Co., Missouri and died (obituary) February 4, 1935 in Zeandale, Kansas. She was married to Jacob F. Groves on September 6, 1880. Children of Mary Ann and Jacob Groves were: Samuel Earl Groves, Sara Jane Groves, Elizabeth Groves, Robert Groves, Etta Groves, Florence Groves, Nellie Groves, Ida May Groves, Roy Pearl Groves, Edward Arthur Groves, Tillie Edith Groves, Arthur Groves, Sr.
Susan Brazzle- born about 1865
were married December 23, 1867. "Marriage License of Dec. 9, 1867; Marriage Record December 23, 1867- Blue Rapids twp, Marshall County, Kansas: Greeting, You are hereby authorized by law to join in marriage Joshua Brazzel of Marshal County State of Kansas aged Twenty Three years and Rachel Gano of Marshall County State of Kansas aged Nineteen years. And of this License you will make due return to my office within thirty days. Probate Judge of Marshall County, Kansas."
Rachel was a sister to Sarah Jane Gano and when Sarah Jane died, Joshua married Rachel. They are the daughters of Robert Gano and Phoebe Newland. Rachel died on November 30, 1891 at Hollenberg, Kansas; cause of death was Peritonites (source: Death Record, Book C, page 81; Washington County Clerk, Washington, Ks)

She married John Wesley Dodson on July 9, 1890 in Hollenberg, Washington Co. Ks, son of William and Lavinia Buzzard Dodson. John was born July 18, 1872 in Polo, Ogle Co, IL and died July 28, 1935 in Denver Co. Sarah Margaret was nicknamed Marg-- at least that is the only name I have heard from my older relatives-- Marg Brazzel. Children of Marg and John Dodson are: Martha Elizabeth Dodson, George Reuben Dodson, Rosetta Dodson, Bessie Gladyus Dodson, John William Dodson, Elmer Guy Dodson.

were married about 1896.Rachel Fielder was the daughter of Charles and Louisa McKay Fielder. She was born September 22, 1855 in Illinois. Rachel's first husband was William Terry Singleton whom she married on December 12, 1875 in St. Augustine, Knox County, Illinois. He died February 22, 1883 in Hanover, Washington County, Kansas. She then married William N. Dodson on March 11, 1886 in Washington, Kansas and he died October 27, 1891 in Hollenberg, Kansas. She married a third time in about 1896 to Joshua Brazzle. She worked as a midwife after the death of her first husband in order to raise her children.
