Charles Cain was born October 30, 1887 in Clay Co., Vining, Kansas; died October 23, 1961 also in Vining, Kansas. He was the son of Samuel Gilbert and Nancy Ellen King Cain. On May 8, 1916 he married Martha Margaret Dawson in Clay Center, Ks. She was the daughter of Elmer Morton and Ella Zennia Queary Dawson and was born May 8, 1896 in Ames, Kansas and died March 28, 1978. Charles and Martha had two children: June Charlene Cain, born January 26, 1917 and Merle Dawson Cain born August 18, 1922.

An article about Charles and Martha's marriage was in the Clay Center Dispatch on Thursday, May 11, 1916. It reads as follows: "Were Married On Monday-- A marriage license was issued yesterday afternoon to Chas. Cain of Vining and Miss Martha Dodson of Ames. Judge Anthony also performed the marriage ceremony. The young people were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Lew Woodruff, the latter being a sister of the groom."

"Dawson - Cain. Miss Martha Marguerite Dawson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mart Dawson and Charles Cain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cain, of Vining, were married by the Probate Judge, of Clay Center, on Monday of this week, that day also being the birthday of the bride. The bride is a popular young lady of good standing in the community in which she lives and by all those who know her. The groom is a paper hanger and decorator by trade and has no bad habits. He is industrious and worthy of the girl who has cast her lot with him in the fortune wheel of matrimony. A pretty little home in Vining has been prepared by the groom for his bride, where they will go to housekeeping at once."

Dodson-Cain: -- Miss Martha Dodson of Ames, Kan, and Mr. Charles Cain of Vining were united in marriage on Monday afternoon, May 8th, the marriage taking place at the court house in the office of the probate judge. The ceremony was performed by W.P. Anthony in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Woodruff of the Clifton neighborhood, who accompanied the young people to Clay Center that day, Mrs. Woodruff being a sister of the groom. Mr and Mrs Cain are well known in the Clifton and Vining neighborhood, especially the groom who has always lived in that community. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Cain of Sherman township, who until a few years ago made their home in Vining for many years, and has many friend thereabouts. The bride, although a resident of Ames, has made numerous visits in Vining with her cousin, Mrs. Robert Hass, and is quite well known in the neighborhood, where she hereafter makes her home. The friends of both Mr. and Mrs. Cain wish them all kinds of happiness and asuccess throughout their married life and will be pleased to know that they expect to take up a residence in their midst. They will go to housekeeping in the Cain property in Vining."

Charles Carson; Final Resting Place, Vining Cemetery; Casket Bearers: James Haas, Lawrence Kahrs, Louis Dallen, Perry Peterson, Rayburn Stunkel, George Watson."

The obituary of Charles was printed in the Clifton News of November 2, 1961. Following is an abstract of the obituary: "Charles Ray Cain was born on a farm west of Vining, Kansas, October 30, 1887. Member of Christian Church. United in marriage to Martha Dawson of Ames, Kansas on May 8 1916. Two children: June Charlene and Merle Dawson Cain. June passed away on May 20, 1955. He leaves to mourn his wife, Martha; son, Merle, daughter-in-law Ruth and 5 grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Emma Woodruff of Watonga, Oklahoma and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services held October 26, Turner's Chapel." Another obituary was in the Clifton News of October 26, 1961. Abstract as follows: Charlie Cain, long time resdient of Vining, died Monday evening at 8:32 in the Clay Center Hospital where he had been a patient for over two weeks.Funeral services to be Thursday afternoon at Turners Chapel. Burial in Vining Cemetery."

Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Haas and children, Marie, James and Doris; Mrs. Roy Fletcher and daughter, Ruth; Mrs. and Mrs. chas. Cain and June and buddy. The occasion was also in honor of Mrs. Fletcher's birthday which will be Jan. 30"
