James Cain and Ann Maria Decot


James Cain was born about 1817 in Perry County, Ohio the son of John Cain and Elizabeth Brandt. On December 5, 1838 he married Ann Maria Decot ( Perry Co, Ohio Marriage Index, vol 1, page 27) in Perry County, Ohio. James died August 28, 1880 in Perry County, Ohio at age 63 years and 1 month.

Obituary: Somerset Press, September 2, 1880 Mr. James Caine, an old and respected citizen of this vicinity, died on Sunday afternoon at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. A. Decot, after a long and protracted illness. Deceased was born near this place, on the 3d day of August, A.D. 1817 and at the time of his death was 63 years and 27 days old. He was married December 6th, 1838, to Mary Decot, who still survives him, and by whom thirteen children were born to them. The wife and but one child survive him. He was a man generally respected; always affable and friendly, and the community in which he moved have lost in him a friend and respected neighbor. He remains were buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Rev. Father Kehoe officiating.

Ann Maria was born about 1819 in Alsace, France and died (Record of Perry County, Ohio Deaths) in November, 1882. The record states: Mary Cain, female; white; widowed; date of death, 11-82; age at death, 64; place of death, Reading Twp; Place of Birth, France; occupation, farmer; cause of death, General Debility; Ledger #2.

Her name has been found spelled in various ways: Ann Maria, Maria, Mary, Decat, Deckor, Decot. Her mother, also named Mary, is listed with James and Ann Maria in the 1880 census. Her father, Francis Decot, is buried at St. Joseph's Rectory in Somerset, Perry County, Ohio. Interred on October 19, 1855 and was 77 years old at death.

1880 Census Perry Co., Reading Twp, Ohio: does not list Henry- he died between 1876 and 1880 (because of the ages of his children). It does list: Jane Cain age 32, keeps house, widowed, born Georgia; Catharine age 12; Elizabeth age 11; George age 7; Ella age 6, John age 3.

Interments of St. Joseph's Church, Somerset, Ohio lists the burial records of Henry's wife Jane and their daughter Anna Catherine. Mrs. Jane (Elkins) Cain, wife of Henry Cain, born July 15, 1848 and died Aug 30, 1884; Annie Cain (Anna Catherine Cain) daughter of Henry Cain and Jane Elkins, born July 6, 1867, died May 13, 1883.

"Barquilla de la Santa Maria: Bulletin of the Catholic Record Society- Diocese of Columbus Volumes X, XI, XII-- St Joseph Old Cemetery near Somerset, Perry County Tombstone Inscriptions. --- Hariet wife of Henry Bohrer died Dec. 2, 1873 age 21 yrs. 11 mon 2 ds."

Robert A. Cain- born about 1852; died December 4, 1873.--" The Somerset Press, December 12, 1873-- Accident.- Robert Cain, Son of James Cain, of this vicinity, was accidentally killed on Thursday last, six miles Northeast of Athens, Ohio, where he was employed about a portable Sawmill. It appears that work for the day had closed, and Cain was making some necessary arrangements about the machinery which was still running. While thus engaged, he was caught by the band passing over the fly wheel, and instantly killed. His remains were brought home and interred at St. Joseph's on Sunday last. On the same day Mrs. Boher, daughter of James Cain died at her resdience in Bremen, and was buried at St. Josephs on Thursday last. Mr. Cain has the sympathy of community in his double bereavement."

Cain age 9; Sarah Cain age 7; Emily Cain age 5; Ellenora age 3; Caroline age 1 month; John Cain age 50, laborer. This John Cain is James' father.
