John Cain and Elizabeth Brandt Mouler Cain

Cain/Caine Family Tree

John and Elizabeth (Brandt, Mohler) Cain

John was born about 1794 in Pennsylvania according to the 1860 census record but in the 1850 census he says he was born in VA. He married Elizabeth Brandt Mouler on July 6,1815 ( Fair 00B 092 book) in Fairfield County, Ohio. This marriage record is the first record I have of the Cain's in Ohio.

Elizabeth was born circa 1780 probably in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Lodwick and Mary Brandt, Sr. Her first husband was Jacob Mouler/Mouler/Mohler. He died in 1805 in Fairfield County, Ohio and Elizabeth was named administrator of his estate. See the Jacob Mouler estate papers.

In Ludwick Brandt's (Elizabeth's father) will he lists Mary and Eliza as his granddaughters and Martin and Jacob Mohler as his grandsons. Martin and Jacob received money from his estate while Mary and Eliza were listed with Elizabeth's children by John Cain to receive 25 acres of ground after her decease.

John and Elizabeth had four sons: Lewis born 1816, James born 1819, Isaiah born about 1822 and John. According to the 1850 Ohio Mortality Schedule Elizabeth Cain died in June of 1849 or 1850 in Perry Co. Ohio at age 71. Her place of birth was listed as Pennsylvania and cause of death was unknown. The land that was willed to her by her father was now deeded to her children. It was divided into fourths so presumably 2 of the children had already died. Mary Mohler Kishler, Lewis Cain, James Cain and Isaiah Cain received portions of the land. See the land records on this site for the transactions.

After Elizabeth died, John moved in with James and Ann Maria Cain, his son and family. He is listed in the 1850 census of Perry County, Ohio as living with them. He apparently didn't live very long with James because on December 8, 1853 he married Elizabeth Monroe in Vinton Co. Ohio (source: Vinton Co. Marriage Records). They bought 20 acres of land in Vinton County on January 20, 1855--- R17, T11, S1. John Caine probably died about 1874 in Vinton Co. Ohio. On March 26, 1874, Elizabeth Monroe Cain sold her share of the 20 acres (Vol 16 - March 26, 1874) and then on March 7, 1880, John Caine's share of the 20 acres was sold to pay taxes. John and Elizabeth Monroe Cain were listed in the 1860 census of Vinton Co but not in the 1870 census. Then in 1880 Census, Elizabeth Cane-- age 83, widowed, born VA--is listed as an inmate of the Vinton County Infirmary.

Living next door to John and Elizabeth in the 1820 census is Patrick Cain and her father and brother, Ludwick and Lewis Brandt. I believe this Patrick Cain to be John's father but do not have any definite proof. John and Elizabeth named their first born, Lewis, after her father (Lewis is the English word for Lodwick) but named their second born James. Is James the name of John's father? or is it Patrick who lived next door to John and Elizabeth. In the 1840 census there is a James Cain, Sen. living fairly close to John and Elizabeth. The information that I have collected on Patrick and James Cain, Sen. are at this site. James Cain Sen. and Patrick Cain.
