| The HIBERNIAN was built by Wm.Denny & Bros, Dumbarton, Scotland in 1860 for the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company, which in 1897 became the Allan Line. She was a 1,888 gross ton ship, length 280ft x beam 37.7ft, clipper stem, with one funnel, three masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 11 knots. There was accommodation for 101-1st, 30-2nd and 324-3rd class passengers. Launched on 11 January 1861, she sailed on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal on 23 May 1861. In 1871 she was lengthened to 351.2ft and 2,752 tons. |
| On 17 August 1871 she resumed the Liverpool - Quebec - Montreal service. On 19 December 1871 she commenced her first Liverpool - Halifax - Norfolk - Baltimore sailing and on 23 October 1883 started her last voyage from Liverpool to Halifax and Baltimore. On 28 March 1884 she was transferred to the Glasgow - Philadelphia route for two round voyages and then on 25 June 1884 to the Glasgow - Boston route for two further round voyages. In 1885 she was rebuilt to a tonnage of 3,440 tons, two masts and re-engined. On 5 August 1885 she resumed the Glasgow - Philadelphia service and on 19 December 1900 commenced her final voyage from Glasgow to Boston. In 1901 was scrapped in Germany. I, Frederick Archer Master of the British Steam-ship Hibernian do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List of Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said vessel at L'Pool, Queenstown & Halifax (& Bound for U. S. A.) from which Port said vessel has now arrived ; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said Passengers, the part of the Vessel occupied by each during the passage, and the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant ; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.
