Henry Brice (c1831-1903)
of Exeter
Henry Brice
was born c. 1831 at Lyme Regis, Dorset,
and married Harriet
HAMES from Halberton, Devon. They initially lived at
Bath, Somerset, where they had at least three children before moving to
Exeter between 1858 and 1861.

According to Scott (1985), Henry Brice intially worked as a colourist
for the photographer Owen Angel. However he was shown as a "photographer and portrait
painter"
at the time
of the 1871 Census, and Brice gives the following addresses and dates
for him:
May
1861 : 4 Queen
Street
May
1863 : 27 Queen
Street
1867
: 241 High Street
Jul 1873 : 3 Lower Summerlands
It
is not known,
however, how long he
continued in the photographic business, because earlier and subsequent
censuses
only show him as a portrait painter. His youngest son Alfred
became an artist too, describing himself as an "illustrator of periodicals"
in
April 1891.
