Abner
Grainger was
born at Codnor, Derbyshire in 1850, son of William & Eliza
Grainger.
He married Julia C. Rice, and by April 1881 they were living on the
High
Street, Codnor. Abner was working as an "engine tenter" at a
local
colliery. Ten years later, in the 1891 Census, he described
himself
as an "engine driver", and then as a "stationary engine driver" in 1901.
Kelly's 1895
trade directory
shows Abner Grainger operating a studio at 7 Loscoe Road, Heanor.
Adamson (1997) suggests that these premises remained open until 1906,
and that there were additional premises at 16 High Street, Heanor, from
1904 to 1908. It also lists an "A.G. Grainger" at Wright Street
in Codnor from 1906 to 1907, although it is not clear if this was Abner. |
