Augustine Porri (c. 1831-1909)

of Nottingham & Sandiacre

Augustine Porri first trained and set up as a photographer in his home town of Nottingham, but subsequently moved to Sandiacre in Derbyshire, where he operated a studio from the late 1890s for about a decade.

Augustine Porri was born c. 1831 in Nottingham, son of John Porri and Sarah Wilson.  He married Hannah (or Annie) Nixon at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire on 14 January 1860.  They initially settled in Nottingham, and were living at 1 Harrison's Yard, Radford, where Porri is shown as a photographer in the 1861 Census.  By April 1871, however, Augustine (or Austin) and his wife were in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and he was described as a travelling photographer.  A decade later, in April 1881, he was back in his home town, living at 14 White Cow Yard, Carter Gate, Nottingham St Mary's and working as a "photographer".  An example of a CDV, dated tentatively from the mid-1870s (see below), is from his period at Carter Gate.

They moved to Sandiacre, in Derbyshire, between then and 1891 (Census) - probably after late 1886, as he was not listed in Kelly's 1887 directory - and he opened a photographic studio in Derby Road, also listed in Kelly's 1895 directory.  Kelly's 1899 directory lists him as a furniture broker and dealer.  Augustine and Hannah Porri were still living in Sandiacre in 1901, and he was shown as a "Broker General".  It apears that he had probably ceased working as a photographer by late 1898.  He died in 1909 at Sandiacre.

Notes by AP:  Unfortunately I do not know who this couple are. I am guessing that it is my gg-grandfather Henry Hinton, born c. 1806, with his second wife Sarah.  Sarah died in 1873, so if the photo was taken later than this it can't be them.
