Alfred Thomas Dillon was born at
Walcot, Bath in Somerset, on 18 June 1864, son of a butcher Robert
Dillon
(1820-1893) and his second wife Sarah née Johnstone. He
became an apprentice to a photographer in his home town of Bath as a
teenager, where he was working in 1881. By 1889, however, he had
married and was living in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, where a daughter
Norah was born. Kelly's trade directory for 1891, probably
compiled in late 1890, shows him as a newspaper reporter, living at
Bridge street, Belper, but in April 1891 the family had moved to
Lincoln, where Alfred and his wife Florence show themselves as "actor"
and "actress", respectively. Work in that profession was
obviously intermittent, because by late 1899 (Kelly, 1900) they were
living at 2 Albert Villas, Great Malvern in Worcestershire. They
were still there in 1901, when Arthur once again described himself as a
photographer's assistant. Alfred T. Dillon died in the Eton
Registration District on 7 October 1929. A single cabinet card by A.T. Dillon, from his time in Chesterfield, is shown below - it was probably taken in the late 1880s. He is not listed by Adamson (1997). |
