Benjamin
Brough was born c. 1852-53 at Hanley, Staffordshire. As a young
man he worked as a miner, first in Shelton, near Hanley, and later in
the coal mines of Hasland, near Chesterfield in north Derbyshire.
He married Evangeline Dawes at Chesterfield in 1875, and together they
had a son George and four daughters, Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary and Eva. Benjamin Brough turned his hand to photography some time in the 1880s. By the time of the census in April 1891 he described himself as a "Lanternist & Photographer", catering in particular to schools and gentlemen's residences. He died in early 1893. The 1901 Census shows his widow as a grocer at 72 Sheffield Road, Chesterfield. |
